Any of you amazing ladies interested in doing Ragnar Northwest Passage July 9 and 10? I’m unable to do it because of a health issue. Super fun team of ladies. Message me if interested for details.
On the latest episode of Speak Spokane, I sit down with Kurt Salquist, Owner & Trainer at Corefitinc.

We talk about what makes his gym truly unique and the family-oriented community he’s built there. We also talk about how COVID has affected his gym & why it’s so important to stay active during this time.

This episode of Speak Spokane is presented by D. Lish's Hamburgers & sponsored by Furniture Outpost.

Good evening CoreFit tribe!

I know it’s been a while since many of you have seen or spoken to me. But I’m really excited to start seeing all of you around the ‘office’ and getting a chance to catch up here next week.

I just wanted to jump on here and let you all know Kurt and I spoke today and we will be continuing the Sunday lift class! (Resistance focused)

Also, I wanted to get some of the community input as to where we are all at in our fitness? How’s our mobility? Cardio? Gut health? Weight? Etc.?

I’m trying to tune the lift series to an appropriate level of intensity for our community. I know when we last met I almost could not make the one hour class hard enough anymore because everyone was a beast! 🙂
Hi CoreFit folks, please be safe out there.
Just wanted to make you aware that 4 days ago a woman was walking alone in Riverside State Park (near lower Downriver Golf Course/Golf Disk area) and was assaulted (r***d) at knife point. The man then took her phone and vanished. We live just above the golf course and had police everywhere. Unfortunately, they have not have not caught the perpetrator. Because we have so many walkers and runners, our Downriver/Audubon neighborhood council contacted the new stations to see why they chose not to report on it. No answer back from them. So, just making people aware here. Please keep this lady in your thoughts. And, even with social distancing maybe think about pairing up when out on the trails. Be safe.

A local Spokane event which my family and I enjoy competing in is the Corefitinc "Ultimate Fitness Run", an obstacle course race which will take place on June 15 on Mt Spokane.

There will be a kids race, an open division, and an exciting competitive wave with a doubleheader: 6-mile traditional obstacle race followed by 1-2 miles more of a TMX-style course. Spots for this race are extremely limited, so don’t sleep on this chance to have some fun outside with your fam! Bring it on! Use this code when you register: Ben10UFR
We have 3 extra tickets to see Travis Thompson tomorrow night at the Nabisco Building near Washington downtown at 8pm it is Jay Gingrich twin sister’s son and rapper extraordinaire! Let me know if you are interested!

Nutrition isn’t about restriction, restraint, or calorie counting. Solid nutrition balances knowledge about what your body needs, and your thoughts and emotions related to food. When we make choices about what we consume from a place of respect for our body and what we ask of it, food moves from assuming a lead role as entertainment and/or comfort in our lives to that of fuel, enabling and empowering us to pursue our best life.

Our large open garage-style space allows us unlimited flexibility and creativity to accommodate most every workout and need. Our assault bikes and rowers move around the room as workouts require and can even be positioned facing out our large, open doors to provide a view, a breeze, and lungs full of fresh air while pushing hard. Our established member for this month’s spotlight is Isaiah, who is one of the early bird 5am attenders and is known for pulling up on his ‘05 1500cc Vulcan Cruiser whenever the weather is nice. Let’s get to it.

How old are you? 37

What programs do you participate in at Corefit?

CORE and OCR

How long have you been a member?

It will be 3 years this coming July

What brought you to Corefit?

I drove by it everyday and saw the sign on the east side along 2nd Ave. I called Kurt to make sure there was a shower available and the rest is history. For context, I have 4 kids. I was able to stay fit through kid #2, but my life/personal time quickly disappeared at #3. So after a 5-year fitness hiatus and 1 modest beer belly experience, I started back at the valley YMCA. After a year of their classes, I was looking for a more challenging program, so I started looking at CrossFit. Most gyms I called didn’t have showers or a 5am class. Corefit had BOTH, and was like 5 blocks from my work. So it was a huge logistical win for me.

Has fitness always been a part of your life?

I was definitely a jock and have always been fit, excluding the 5 year no-gym period. I played football, basketball, track, and lifted weights. I did a couple half marathons pre-baby making.

So why do it now? Why push yourself the way you do, work so hard, do the hard?

Let’s see…vanity #1, stress relief #2. I work hard when I’m there because I don’t know any different.

I respect the honesty. I think we can all relate to either or both. You told me once that you’ve only seen a handful of movies. What’s the story there?

There was a time in my early twenties where I would come home after working, drink beers and veg on TV until it was time to go to bed. I decided that there were other ways I would rather spend my time. So I read a lot, or kept myself active in the evenings by developing my cooking skills, or doing chores that didn’t have to wait til the weekend.

You’re definitely a great example of course-correcting and the benefit of doing so when our eyes are opened to an area that is need of some adjustment. Those in-the-moment corrections can prevent the need for huge life changes and shifts down the road after traveling in the wrong direction for an extended period of time. There is always a way forward no matter where we find ourselves but you’ve shared a couple examples now of intentional shifts that have kept you from veering too far off course. Kudos.

Corefit emphasizes that all levels are welcome which is reflected in its membership. It is not a gym full of elite athletes. But the fact that you’ve stayed for several years now suggests that the inclusion of folks at varying places in their journey hasn’t impacted your ability to get in a workout that challenges someone at your level. Is that true?

Have you ever seen me jump rope? I wouldn’t call myself an elite athlete. I have many skills that I want to improve and techniques that I want to refine. And I have the opportunity to focus on those skills within the structure of the Corefit program. My goals are different than they were when I was in my 20s. I’m not as fast and I don’t lift as heavy. And I’m ok with that. I want to maintain my fitness so that I can do the things that I enjoy: hunting, camping, fishing. And working out in a group is definitely more fun than working out alone. Plus the 5 am-ers hold me accountable. They call me out if I don’t show up.

Do you have any goals for this year?

Fitness goals? Maybe finally kick these last 20lbs and lose some weight. And I’ve seen pictures of athletes that have completed Spartan races and so ya, I have to do at least one.

Well Montana is nearly upon us. Have a fantastic first Spartan. We’re excited to hear all about it. AROO!

We often allow our feelings to dictate our behavior and create the actions that lead to our identity. For example, "I am tired so I go home after work and eat versus exercise." The end result doesn't feel very good if you had wanted to make changes. This pattern repeated becomes a habit and tells our conscious we are not the type of person who attends the gym. Our goal fades away until the next spurt.
What would happen if you FLIPed that scenario? You focused on the identity you wanted to encompass first and asked yourself, "what would a (insert identity important to you) do? Complete your action or behavior chosen to represent that identity, and the end result? You feel good. Welcome to identity-led habits.

Equally important as the hard work we do together is the celebration of the journey. What a fun evening this past weekend sharing stories, laughter, and inspiration for continued growth. CoreFit has become a collaboration of amazing individuals from all abilities and walks of life. The motivation that lives amongst this community has changed lives, sparked the courage for adventures that will forever be cherished, and will undoubtedly continue to do so. Thank you all who celebrate with us and thank you in advance for those who will inspire our next reason to celebrate. Maybe it will be you. Cheers to living the Fit Life!
