Humans have been swimming all the way back to the stone age, and we know this because cave drawings show them swimming and there are written references to swimming in manuscripts dated back to between 1,000 and 2,000 years ago.
Swimming builds muscle mass. In fact, in a recent study of men who swam for eight weeks, they increased their triceps by 23.8 percent. If you do no weight training at all, and then start to swim, you’ll likely begin to get muscle tone because of the resistance training.
Infants can be introduced to the water at a fairly early age so that they become comfortable with being under water and holding their breath while under the surface of a pool.
During swimming lessons, you'll learn how to kick your legs to hold you above water. Practice kicking your legs, whether you're floating on your back or holding onto the side of the pool. A flutter kick is done with your toes pointed out and legs straight, alternating legs as you kick.
The back stroke is easier than the butterfly and the breast stroke, so it is taught earlier in swimming lessons. It’s similar to the crawl because you use alternating windmill arm movements and a flutter kick.
Did you know that according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, by four years of age most children can learn basic aquatic locomotion? However, swim lessons at an earlier age can still be beneficial, as they can teach survival skills and how to be comfortable around water.
You may find that you prefer to wear goggles when learning to swim. Wearing these can help you feel more comfortable opening your eyes underwater, and might allow you to see more clearly. Find a pair with spongy circles around the yes and dip them in the water, so that they’ll stick to your skin.
If your children frequently visit friends or family who have swimming pools, it’s important to ensure they know how to swim. Since it may not always be possible for an adult to watch them at all times, swimming lessons could save their lives.
Did you know that swimming is one of the more accessible forms of exercise for kids with weight issues or physical impairments? Due to the ease of movement that water allows, swimming is an excellent way for kids to exercise and have fun.
In most cases, swimming is classified as an aerobic exercise because it requires a constant supply of oxygen for your muscles; however, it is also anaerobic in short sprints.
Learning how to swim allows someone the confidence to try other water sports, from jet-skiing and sailing to power boats and deep sea fishing.
