Check out what sophomore Raquel Walecka has to say about WNE and our program! 🔊

“I chose WNE because I knew I would be challenged both academically and athletically. Our small class sizes allow me to voice my opinions and ideas, actively participate, and work closely with my professors when I need support.

The level of competition in the was another significant factor in my decision. Playing in this conference has given me the opportunity to compete with and against some of the best DIII players and teams in the country. At WNE, I am constantly challenged to grow both as a student and athlete.

WNE Hockey is a family. We show up for each other on and off the ice while maintaining a “fun but focused” atmosphere. Our energy is what really sets us apart from other teams. It is not unusual for us to spontaneously break into a funny song or chant, but when it comes time to work, we give 100% effort and focus for each other. We compete hard in practice to make one another better players, and we compete even harder for each other in games. I can always count on my teammates to push me to become a better person and player, and that is what makes our culture so special.

Our coaching staff plays a huge role in shaping us not only as hockey players, but as people. Their positivity, determination, and passion are truly inspiring. They are some of the most dedicated people I have ever met, and I admire them for their love for the game, our team, and each of us as individuals. They push us to grow, hold us accountable, and genuinely care about our development both on and off the ice.”

Check out what rising sophomore Ava Camelio has to say about WNE and our program! 🔊

“I chose WNE because of Coach Zimmerman, the great academic opportunities, and the small class sizes. From the beginning, Coach Zimmerman made me feel welcomed and showed how much she cares about her players, both on and off the ice. I wanted a school where I could build strong relationships with my professors, succeed in the classroom, and continue playing the game I love at a competitive level. WNE offers everything I was looking for, and I’m excited to be part of the Golden Bear family.

I’d describe our culture as hardworking, supportive, and team-first. Everyone is committed to improving every day, and we genuinely want the best for each other. It’s a group that’s competitive on the ice but close off the ice, and that’s what makes it such a great environment to be part of.

The coaching staff does a great job of building relationships with the players and making everyone feel valued. Coach Zimmerman brings a lot of knowledge and passion to the program, while also holding us to a high standard. They challenge us to improve every day and give us the tools we need to be successful.

One thing I would add is how close our team is and how much we truly value each other. We have built a culture where everyone feels supported, both on and off the ice. We care about each other as teammates and as people, and mental health is something we prioritize within our team. Having a group that encourages open communication, supports one another through challenges, and celebrates each other’s successes makes this program really special.”
