Bob Zastrow is a master craftsman whose work blends precision engineering with artistic woodworking. His curved keyboard installation is a striking example of both technical discipline and creative vision. Constructed from approximately 350 individual pieces of wood, the piece transforms a familiar musical form into an architectural feature.
Each material is carefully selected for both function and visual contrast: the white keys are made of maple, the black keys of black walnut, and fine ebony accents define the separation lines and detailing. The surrounding structure and trim are crafted from cherry, creating a warm, cohesive frame that enhances the overall composition. The end grain of the black walnut keys adds depth and texture, highlighting the attention to detail throughout this beautiful project.
What sets this work apart is not just its beauty, but the precision required to achieve it. Because the keyboards follow a curved radius, every key had to be cut with an exact taper—held within a tolerance of just .005 of an inch. Any deviation would compound across the structure and distort the curvature. Each 1/8-inch-thick wood piece was meticulously shaped, glued onto a 1/2-inch plywood base, then sanded, finished, and assembled into the final form.
Zastrow’s work exemplifies the intersection of craftsmanship and mathematical accuracy, where even the smallest detail contributes to a seamless and harmonious whole.
Bob has been a legacy customer since 2019 and is 86 years young.
