Your max heart rate can be maintained for the period of most HIIT workouts that last less that 20 Min. You can calculate your MHR and it can more easily be observed if you have a monitor on during workouts. Just look down. When the HR stops increasing you are at your max. Knowing your maximum heart rate helps you push yourself to work as hard as you can. Keep in mind that you can only sustain this maximum effort for a specific period of time and exercising at max can cause you to dip into your anaerobic threshold causing you to produce lactic acid, which can create post-exercise muscle soreness which normally wont happen in an aerobic activity. Your Max HR can be improved along with stoke volume to greatly increase your body's working efficiency. So don't be afraid of it use it like the rpms of your car when you need to go fast get on the throttle.
