Detroit Free Press Marathon Training 7/20-7/26
13 weeks out | 50 miles
Goal: start turning the base I’ve been working on the past two months into some solid fitness via structured workouts
It’s interesting because my long runs don’t feel that long compared to what I was doing in the spring, but between the heat/humidity and reintroducing solid workouts, they are still taxing!
Detroit is my favorite race of the year. Last year, I didn’t know if I would have the BQ that I needed, so I registered for the full and, since it’s gotten so popular, I wound up sticking with the full instead of trying to go through the transfer process. This year, I registered for the international half and am so excited as this is my favorite. My goal will be to see what kind of fitness I can build and see where that takes me in the half (which is truly my favorite distance).
Here’s what I’ve been doing the past few months…
May: Boston recovery (ie, running whatever the heck I felt like without structure 🤣)
June + July: build base, focus on really emphasizing truly easy running (I can be a bit of an a-hole with pacing sometimes and “just run”…this has been a big project for me…thank you to my mom for chatting with me on lots of runs and keeping me honest 📱). I’ve been averaging about 50 mpw. This has honestly been a bit of a challenge for me, but I needed the mental break.
Late July & beyond: start layering in workouts to recoup speed but primarily focus on tempo efforts to enhance stamina. Long runs will stay primarily easy for the time being and then I will start to layer in goal paces as we get closer. Emphasis will be on workouts vs super lengthy long runs.
What are you training for next?

You may not know this about me because I share a lot about running… but a large percentage of my clients are focused on getting stronger, moving better, and taking care of their bodies for the long term.
Many of my clients are in their 60s and up (my oldest client right now is 84, which is so exciting!), but I also work with people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s who want to build a stronger foundation for the years ahead.
The goal is often the same:
How do we put more life in our years?
How do we move better, hurt less, feel stronger, and build habits that allow us to keep doing the things we love?
In our sessions, we focus on the “big rocks” that matter at every age: balance, carrying heavy loads, getting up and down from the floor, standing from a seated position, and building strength through pushing and pulling movements.
These are some of the things I’m most passionate about (and my clients know it because I will talk about the benefits for days if they let me! 😂).
We also focus on the foundations of good nutrition: creating balanced meals, listening to hunger cues, building realistic meal prep routines, and creating habits that are sustainable long-term.
After years of coaching, I wanted to combine all of the things I could talk about forever into one program…
IAF Method Nutrition & Wellness Coaching.
This is a 12-week 1:1 coaching program using weekly lessons, habit tracking, and personalized support to help you build better nutrition and wellness habits.
It’s not a diet. It’s not a quick fix. It’s about learning the building blocks and creating habits that actually fit your life.
Round 1 wrapped up in June and went so well that I’m opening Round 2 starting Monday, July 27!
I designed this round so you can build great habits before the busy fall season arrives and finish before the holiday craziness begins.

Congratulations to the incredible Megan! She was planning on running an exciting 5K at the escapetobelleisle race this past weekend, but a missed turn for the 5K meant she was still cruising….around the entire island!
Megan not only finished first in the 10K, but she had a phenomenal 5K within the 10K as well, estimated at approximately 20:37 (which also would have won the 5K!). She realized that the turn must have come and gone, she regrouped, and then carried on. She wound up finishing in 45:10, which was first female and 5th overall.
I am so proud of your resolve to regroup and keep going despite how difficult that must have felt after a super fast opening three miles! 🏆 🥇

Round 2 of the IAF Method Nutrition & Wellness Coaching is coming soon!
My inaugural round of the all-new IAF Method Nutrition & Wellness Coaching wrapped up last month and I am ecstatic with how well my clients did.
I kept it intentionally small so I could have close-knit communication with the participants.
And now I'm excited to open Round 2!
If you are curious, here's what you need to know:
GOAL: EDUCATION! We go slow and learn from the ground up, helping you to come away with knowledge and weekly action steps to help develop lifelong habits, NOT fads, dieting, or meticulous tracking. You will learn foundational habits and techniques that you can apply forever, regardless of any specific dietary practices you have.
WHO: It can be customized whether your goal is health optimization, weight management, or performance enhancement.
HOW: Each week, you receive a lesson in an online database that you can save and print. We start with a foundational habit that you track in a simple spreadsheet that I can see too and collaborate each week with feedback and notes to keep you motivated.
WHAT: Everything is delivered in an online drive so it's simple to use and most importantly, savable! You'll build a collection of lessons and handouts that will help you to become an expert at your own nutrition by the time we're done.
WHEN: Round 2 is kicking off Monday, July 27 and will run 12 weeks, ending Sunday, November 8 (just in time for great habits to be established before the holiday madness!).

Happy Fourth of July weekend, friends! 🇺🇸
What a weekend it’s been - we lost power while at the pool on Friday. I had all kinds of cooking plans and am grateful I premade most of it including my first jello mold. Thankfully we live super close to my mom and we came over to cook burgers (thanks, Mom!).
Wishing you all a fabulous weekend filled with grilling and fireworks! 🧨
