Lake St. Clair is one of the most overlooked and underappreciated bodies of water in Michigan, sitting quietly between Lake Huron and Lake Erie and connecting the two through the Detroit River system. It's technically not one of the Great Lakes, but it's part of the Great Lakes system and plays a crucial role in the waterway that connects the upper and lower Great Lakes. The lake covers about 430 square miles and sits right on the border between Michigan and Ontario, Canada, making it an international waterway. For people who live in the Detroit metro area, Lake St. Clair is a beloved recreational destination that offers boating, fishing, and waterfront living without the massive scale of the larger Great Lakes.
Lake St. Clair is a boater's paradise. The lake is relatively shallow—averaging only about 10 feet deep—which makes it warm up faster in the summer than the deeper Great Lakes, creating perfect conditions for swimming and water sports. The lake is dotted with marinas, yacht clubs, and waterfront communities, and on any given summer weekend, the water is filled with boats, jet skis, and sailboats. The Grosse Pointes, St. Clair Shores, and Harrison Township all sit along the Michigan shoreline, and these communities have deep ties to the lake's boating culture. For families in southeast Michigan, Lake St. Clair is where you learn to sail, where you spend summer afternoons on the water, and where you dock your boat for the season.
Fishing on Lake St. Clair is world-class, particularly for muskellunge, smallmouth bass, and walleye. The lake has developed a reputation as one of the best muskie fisheries in North America, drawing anglers from across the country who come specifically to fish its waters. Bass fishing tournaments are held regularly, and the lake's shallow, weedy structure creates ideal habitat for a variety of fish species. For serious anglers, Lake St. Clair is a destination lake, and for locals, it's a backyard fishing spot that consistently delivers quality catches.
Lake St. Clair may not get the same recognition as the Great Lakes, but for Michiganders in the southeast, it's just as important. It's a place where generations of families have spent their summers, where boating culture thrives, and where the water connects communities on both sides of the international border. It's smaller, quieter, and more accessible than the Great Lakes, and that's exactly what makes it special. Lake St. Clair is Michigan's hidden gem, and the people who know it wouldn't trade it for anything.
