Trigger Warning: That Night Is One Reason I Teach Self-Defense

I lost my friends that night. Somewhere in the chaos, we drifted apart. We went our own ways. We can’t blame each other for not being better. We didn’t know better. It could never be me. It would never be us. We were untouchable. Small town, big names. Farm girls and country boys. We thought we were safe. So trusting. So naive.

When he said he could take me home, I believed him. A stranger I’d just met.
Too many drinks. Too many winks.
My red flags lifted, but didn’t fully rise.

He bought me a drink. “Just one.”
Then, “Hey, how about another?”
After all, he knew my grandmother. Wink.
“No really, I insist. I thought you liked me.”
Wink.
“Then prove it, princess.”
Wink.
“Where are your friends?”
Wink.
“It’s half past time to leave. Sounds like you need a knight in shining armor.”

But the night was cold, and the darkness was heavy. I couldn’t see his eyes. They stayed shadowed. But his hands were warm.
He could take me home.

He drove me to the apartment complex I’d been at earlier. Just hours before, I was there with my friends, getting ready for a night of laughter, dancing, and memories. That’s what we were chasing, wasn’t it? Memories?

I tried to misdirect.
Don’t go inside.
I searched for an escape. The apartment from earlier was just across the street. A girl lived there. A friend of a friend. Maybe I’d get lucky. Maybe she’d let me in.

But no one was home.
My phone was dead.
I was alone in the middle of the night. With a man who didn’t care what I had to say.

He wouldn’t wait anymore.
Despite my protests.
Despite my fingernails.
Despite everything I thought I could do.

It was later when I convinced him to take me home. He drove me to my house.
I ran for the door.
I sprained my ankle in those sky-high heels.

I teach self-defense because I needed self-defense.
I’ve had my life flash before my eyes.
I’ve been in situations I never thought I’d survive.
I’ve felt pain so deep my tears offered no relief, if I could even cry at all.

Now, I advocate for affordable and accessible self defense training. But more than advocate, I can teach. So we can better prepared.

And we make it home.

Self-defense isn’t one-size-fits-all.

If your training relies on a single resource, a single coach, or a single technique, it’s time to expand your lens.

📊 “Most fights end up on the ground.”
That stat? It’s based on studies of law enforcement and criminal encounters—not everyday civilians. Ask for real-world context. Are you training for a bar fight, a mugging, or a domestic threat? Your reality matters.

💡 If it takes you 3 minutes to get into position for a shoulder throw, is that realistic under pressure?
Probably not. And if you can’t practice it frequently, you won’t be proficient. Modify your approach to match your capabilities and lifestyle. Then, train to proficiency. You don’t need to be a black belt to be effective—you need to be prepared and practical.

🚫 “This is the only way.”
If a coach says that, it’s a red flag. Your body, your mindset, your circumstance: they’re unique. If someone pressures you to fight in a way that doesn’t work for you, let’s find what does.

At MSDS, our instructors train across multiple facilities and encourage students to explore diverse methods. We don’t idolize coaches. We prioritize content, growth, and realism.

👀 If someone’s posting their own face more than their teachings, maybe it’s ego, not education.

MSDS focuses on build a community that’s empowered, informed, and adaptable. Your safety deserves more than a cookie-cutter approach.

Hey Y’all! We’ve had some fun classes lately, both at The Pointe at Ballwin Commons and even in our students backyards, church basements, and local community centers!

We don’t post a lot because it’s just us and we spend more time having 1:1 lessons and hosting these traveling seminars, life often moves too quick for us to stay active on socials. Also, we have a Confidentiality Policy, so if you don’t want your photos posted of your self defense training, we won’t post it. We believe the training is more important than the marketing.

Interested in signing up or taking part in the next public class? Or maybe you know a group who would be interested? We come to you! Send me a message here or fill out the contact form on our website and let’s get you started on your self-defense journey!

The instructors at Modern Self Defense Solutions recently had the opportunity to attend a Civilian Response to Armed Confrontation (CRAC) course—a powerful and engaging experience that left a lasting impact. The course was not only exciting and fun, but also packed with essential, up-to-date knowledge designed to prepare civilians for high-stress, real-world confrontations.

By participating in this course, our team gained valuable insights and tactical training that go beyond theory, helping us better understand the evolving nature of threats and how to effectively respond to them. This experience reinforces our commitment to excellence and allows us to bring the most current, relevant, and practical instruction back to our community.

At MSDS, we pride ourselves on staying at the forefront of self-defense education, and continuing education like the CRAC course ensures that our students are always receiving the best training available; training that could make all the difference when it matters most.
