Have you thought about trying our Aqua Aerobics Class? There's no reason NOT to, but here's a few why you should! 🤽‍♀️

Aqua Aerobics is low-impact, meaning less stress on your joints, while movement in the water creates increased resistance. It also gives you a great full-body workout, builds core-strength and helps increase mobility and flexibility. Staying active can also help lead to a better mood, increased energy and better sleep. We could all use more of that! ☺️

Best of all is the community we foster and the friendships that are made. We offer weekday, morning, afternoon and weekend classes, there's something that works for everyone!

Our current Aqua Aerobics schedule is Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9am-10:30am and 4pm-5:30pm. We are requiring a 24-hour RSVP for ALL weekday classes. You can call us at 912-439-2007, text 912-540-0027 or come on in to sign-up. Saturday class is 10am-11:30am and is open to walk-in's. Cost is only $10 per session. Come and see what you've been missing!

This week’s species spotlight is the Bluntnose Sixgill Shark (Hexanchus griseus). This ancient-looking shark is recognizable by its broad head, small greenish eyes, gray-brown body, and six pairs of gill slits, unlike most sharks, which have five. Adults can reach lengths of around 16 feet (4.8 meters), making them one of the largest deep-water shark species.

Sixgill sharks are thought to have changed relatively little over millions of years. They have a single dorsal fin positioned far back on the body and a long, asymmetrical tail that helps them move efficiently through the water. Their diet includes fish, squid, crustaceans, and occasionally other sharks and marine mammals.

These sharks are found in temperate and tropical waters around the world, often near continental slopes, underwater mountains, and deep reefs. They typically inhabit depths of several hundred to thousands of feet, although they may rise into shallower water at night to hunt. Because they spend much of their lives in deep water, encounters with divers are uncommon, but they have been observed at accessible sites such as British Columbia’s Barkley Sound.

Bluntnose sixgill sharks are generally considered sluggish and are not known for routinely threatening humans. However, they are powerful wild predators, and divers should never attempt to touch, feed, or provoke them. Any encounter should be conducted calmly and respectfully.

The bluntnose sixgill shark is classified as Near Threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Deep-sea fishing pressure, bycatch, and their relatively slow reproductive rate can make populations vulnerable. Protecting deep-water habitats and improving fisheries management are important for their long-term survival.

WHERE TO DIVE WITH IT?

This Week’s Species: Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) Green sea turtles are graceful marine reptiles found in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. Their name comes from the greenish color of their body fat, not their shells!

Florida Keys, Florida�Best: May–September�A convenient destination for Georgia divers! Green turtles inhabit local reefs and seagrass beds and can be spotted year-round.

Bonaire, Caribbean�Best: Year-round�Known for clear water and shore diving, Bonaire offers opportunities to spot green turtles grazing on seagrass or swimming around coral reefs.

Hawaii�Best: Year-round�Hawaiian green turtles, known as honu, are often seen around reefs, bays, and rocky coastlines while snorkeling or scuba diving.

Great Barrier Reef, Australia�Best: June–October for nesting season�Green turtles live here year-round, feeding in seagrass meadows and swimming among coral formations. Nesting occurs seasonally on nearby beaches and islands.

How do you dive with them?
Green turtles can be encountered on reef dives, shore dives, and snorkeling trips. Move calmly, never chase or touch them, and give them room to surface for air. These peaceful animals are wild creatures deserving of our respect. Let them move freely, and never interfere with their natural behavior.

Fun Fact: Green sea turtles can migrate thousands of miles and often return to the same nesting regions where they hatched!

Have you ever wanted to experience scuba diving without taking the full plunge? Our Discover Scuba Class is perfect for you! 🤿

Here at Wreckreation Scuba we want to share our love of diving and make it easy as possible for everyone to experience. For only $50 you can feel what it's like to float weightlessly while breathing underwater in a safe, controlled environment. Our experienced instructors will cover the basics of scuba diving, help you understand the functions of scuba gear and go over some basic skills while you get a taste of the freedom of weightlessness underwater. The best part? If you enjoy it as much as we do, the $50 goes towards your full certification and training cost!

Our next Discover Scuba Class is being held this coming Wednesday, October 21st at 5:30pm. We still have a couple spots available, come on in or call for more information or to sign-up! 📣

Wreckreation Scuba is a full-service SCUBA retail and training facility, (including Dive Avelo!), offering a wide selection of scuba gear, training, trips and community. We also offer annual Visual Inspections on tanks, 5-year Hydrostatic testing, along with air & Nitrox fills for diving & non-diving needs, (we can test & fill paintball tanks too!) This week’s species spotlight is the Christmas Tree Worm (Spirobranchus giganteus). This colorful marine worm is recognizable by its two spiral, tree-shaped crowns, which come in vibrant shades of blue, red, orange, yellow, and white. These feathery spirals are specialized structures used for breathing and filter-feeding, giving the animal its festive name. Most Christmas tree worms measure around 1–1.5 inches (2.5–3.8 centimeters) across.

Christmas tree worms live embedded in tropical coral reefs, where they build protective calcareous tubes within the coral skeleton. Their feathery crowns capture tiny plankton and suspended organic particles from the water. When disturbed, the worms can rapidly retract their crowns into their tubes, making them surprisingly difficult to spot once they disappear.

Found throughout tropical oceans worldwide, Christmas tree worms are especially common on massive corals in shallow reef environments. Each worm generally remains in its own tube for life, making the relationship between these tiny animals and their coral homes an important part of reef biodiversity.

Although they may look like underwater plants, Christmas tree worms are segmented marine worms related to bristle worms. Their colorful crowns are delicate, and touching or disturbing them can cause stress or damage. Divers and underwater photographers should observe them without contact and avoid damaging the coral that shelters them.

Christmas tree worms depend on healthy coral reef ecosystems, which face threats from ocean warming, coral bleaching, pollution, and habitat destruction. Protecting these reefs helps preserve the countless small but fascinating creatures that make coral ecosystems so diverse.

This week’s species spotlight is the Electric Eel (Electrophorus electricus). Despite its name, this remarkable animal is not a true eel but a type of knifefish. It has an elongated, cylindrical body, smooth scaleless skin, and a rounded head. Adults can grow to over 6 feet (1.8 meters) long and weigh up to around 44 pounds (20 kilograms).

Electric eels are famous for their ability to generate powerful electrical discharges. Specialized organs make up most of their body and allow them to produce high-voltage shocks of up to 860 volts. They use weaker electrical signals to navigate murky water and locate prey, while stronger discharges help them hunt and defend themselves.

These predators feed primarily on fish and other aquatic animals. They can even use electrical pulses to trigger involuntary muscle contractions in hidden prey, helping reveal its location. Unlike most fish, electric eels must regularly surface to breathe atmospheric air, making them well adapted to oxygen-poor waters.

Electrophorus electricus is native to freshwater habitats in the Amazon and Orinoco river basins of South America, including rivers, streams, and floodplains. An important scientific note is that it is one of three recognized electric eel species, alongside E. voltai and E. varii.

Although electric eels are fascinating to study, their powerful discharges can cause serious injury and potentially contribute to drowning. They should never be touched or approached, and encounters should always be observed from a safe distance.

Electric eels depend on healthy freshwater ecosystems, which face growing pressures from habitat degradation, pollution, and changes to river systems. Protecting these habitats helps preserve the extraordinary biodiversity of South America’s freshwater environments.
