This week's species spotlight is the Orca (Orcinus orca), also known as the Killer Whale. The largest member of the dolphin family, orcas are instantly recognizable by their striking black-and-white coloration, tall dorsal fin, rounded flippers, and distinctive white eye patches. Males are typically larger than females and can reach lengths of around 30 feet (9 meters), while females generally reach about 25 feet (7.7 meters).

Orcas are apex predators with incredibly diverse diets that vary between populations. Depending on where they live, they may feed on fish, squid, seabirds, sea turtles, seals, sea lions, dolphins, and even other whales. Different populations have developed specialized hunting techniques and dietary preferences, with these behaviors often passed from older individuals to younger generations.

One of the most fascinating aspects of orca life is their complex social structure. Orcas commonly live in stable family groups called pods, often centered around older females. Mothers, grandmothers, and other relatives can remain together for decades, sharing knowledge about feeding grounds, migration routes, and hunting techniques. This makes orcas an extraordinary example of animal culture and the importance of knowledge passed between generations.

Orcas are found in every ocean, from tropical waters to the polar regions, although they are particularly abundant in colder, highly productive waters. They use echolocation to navigate and locate prey and communicate with one another through a variety of clicks, whistles, and pulsed calls. Many populations also have distinct vocal dialects that are learned and passed down within their social groups.

Despite their common name, wild orcas are not considered a threat to humans, and there are no documented cases of a wild orca killing a human. However, they are powerful wild predators and should always be observed respectfully and from an appropriate distance.

The orca is currently classified as Data Deficient by the IUCN, meaning there is not enough information to determine an overall global conservation status. Individual populations can face significant threats, including depletion of prey, pollution, underwater noise, habitat disturbance, and interactions with fisheries.

WHERE TO DIVE WITH IT?

This Week’s Species: Florida Manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris)

Often called “sea cows,” Florida manatees are gentle aquatic mammals that spend their days grazing, resting, and exploring Florida’s waterways. They can grow to around 13 feet long and weigh more than 3,000 pounds. So… where can you get in the water with one?

Crystal River, Florida
Best: November 15–March 31
One of the best places to experience manatees in the wild. During winter, hundreds gather around the warm springs of Kings Bay, including Three Sisters Springs. Snorkeling and passive observation are the best ways to experience them.

Homosassa, Florida
Best: Winter months
Another great Gulf Coast destination. Manatees gather around the area’s warm springs during colder weather, with guided in-water encounters available through permitted operators.

Manatee Springs State Park, Florida
Best: Colder months
This first-magnitude spring near Chiefland is named for its seasonal manatee visitors. Scuba diving is permitted in designated areas, but divers must follow posted manatee protection rules.

How do you get in the water with them?

For close encounters, snorkeling is generally the way to go. The most important rule is passive observation: don’t chase, surround, feed, or touch a manatee. Manatees are protected by both state and federal law, and intentionally touching or disturbing them is illegal.

A little perspective:

Manatees are beautiful, peaceful, curious animals, but they are still wild creatures that deserve our respect. If a manatee approaches you or initiates contact, remember that it is making that choice. Do not reach out, grab, hold, or touch it in return. Calmly and respectfully reposition yourself to give the manatee space to move freely. The goal isn’t to interact with a manatee—it’s to share the water with one without changing its natural behavior.
