STOP CONFUSING “SPORT SPECIFIC” WITH PLAYING THE SPORT

One of the biggest misconceptions in sports performance is believing “sports specific training” means replicating practice.

Just because a drill LOOKS more tactical or resembles the sport does not mean we are coaching the sport itself. In the video, you’ll see acceleration work, deceleration, change of direction, and reactive movement patterns that may appear more “soccer specific.” But there’s still no soccer ball, no tactical formations, and no actual practice replication.

That’s intentional.

Our role as strength and conditioning coaches is not to replace practice. Our job is to enhance the physical qualities that allow athletes to express skill at a higher level once they step onto the field.

We are developing:
• Force production
• Rate of force development
• Acceleration & max velocity
• Deceleration ability
• Multi directional power
• Coordination and resilience under speed

THAT is what transfers.

As someone who played and coached college football, understanding sport absolutely helps shape how I coach movement and physical preparation. But when I step into the weight room, I’m not a football coach. I’m a strength coach.

We aren’t running tackling drills or installing plays in the weight room. We are building violent triple extension, power, strength, stiffness, and movement qualities that transfer back to sport performance.

The best systems understand role clarity. The sport coach develops technical and tactical skill. The strength coach develops the physical engine that allows those skills to be expressed at a higher level.

Keep the main thing the main thing. Develop better athletes first.

Listening to the on the drive into the facility this morning and there were a ton of golden nuggets to take away from throughout the full conversation she had with .

A lot of what Malorie spoke to about soccer and the role S&C has in the sport resonated with myself having worked with Professionals to Academy players in the sport.

But honestly one of the biggest takeaways had nothing to do with sports performance.

It was the conversation around the private sector and learning how to meet parents where they are at while still trying to provide the athlete with what they need over what they Want.

That is one of the hardest balancing acts in private sector sports performance.

As Coaches, we evaluate athletes and immediately identity what actually will move the needle for an athletes performance. But many times what parents and athletes WANT does not align with what the athlete physiologically needs at that moment.

And if we’re being honest as coaches in the private sector… that dance happens every single day.

There are plenty of times where I want an athletes doing certain modalities, load, intensities and I know it’s what they most likely need for their progression. However, I also understand the realities of schedules, parent expectations, and the pressure everyone feels to constantly “do more,” to keep up with the jones training on their teams.

The reality is that it is a service we are providing at the end of the day and we need to at some point meet our clients where they are at.

That’s where education becomes so important.

I’ve learned that if you take the time to educate athletes and parents consistently explaining the “why” behind training. Eventually buy-in starts to happen and people begin to trust the process and align with training methodologies .

That’s why I’m beyond grateful for programs like where the athletes, parents, and coaching staff have fully bought into what we do. When everyone is aligned philosophically, you can actually train athletes appropriately and create the best possible outcomes long term for athletes and the te

SUMMER TRAINING IS DIFFERENT WHEN THE ENVIRONMENT IS ELITE

As college seasons begin to wrap up, we’ve had a massive influx of athletes reaching out about summer training opportunities.

And honestly… this is our favorite time of year.

Over the past several summers, we’ve built something extremely unique here. Our facility becomes a daily environment filled with high-performing athletes ranging from high school standouts to Division I and professional players all chasing the same goal: becoming better.

We work hard. We compete. We push one another daily.

But what makes our summer program special goes far beyond the weight room or the field.

The culture that’s been created here has allowed athletes from different schools, sports, and backgrounds to build real relationships, network, and train together at an elite level. Iron sharpens iron. When you surround yourself with driven people every single day, growth becomes inevitable.

Our program combines:
• Advanced sports science testing and data analytics
• Speed, acceleration, and field application work
• Strength and power development
• Recovery and performance monitoring
• Individualized programming that complements your college off-season program

We utilize tools like VALD ForceDecks, laser timing systems, velocity-based training, GPS metrics, and force profiling to ensure every athlete is training with purpose and intent.

The goal isn’t just to train hard over the summer.
The goal is to return to campus faster, stronger, healthier, more explosive, and fully prepared to compete for a starting role.

If you’re looking for a complete summer performance environment that combines elite training, high-level competition, sports science, and a culture that pushes you to your absolute best…

Reach out ASAP. Summer spots are already beginning to fill.
