I’m always trying to improve my skills as a protector and an instructor. This week I was privileged to learn from some of the best fi****ms instructors in the country at the first ever USCCA National Instructors Conference.

I learned a great deal on how skills and performance is built. I sharpened the strong fundamentals I already have, and learned new neural pathways to rewrite over weaknesses (Perfect Practice).

And since it was for instructors, I learned many ways to improve the performance and skills of the students that I serve. I look forward to implementing new ideas and skills into own practice, as well as my concealed carry, shooting and self defense classes.

Thank You to the USCCA for hosting this event and for the high standards that you are seeking and promoting.

Most parents have never actually read their child's school safety plan.

One father did, and found gaps most families never see.

Here's what to ask before the year starts.

Kelly Herron was 4 miles into a marathon training run at Golden Gardens Park in Seattle when she stopped at a public restroom on March 5, 2017.

As she dried her hands, 40-year-old Gary Steiner came out of a stall.

Police said he p*nched her in the face nearly half a dozen times, wrestled her to the ground and pulled at her pants.

Herron clawed at his face and fought back, rolling into another stall and jamming the door with her leg.

She later said she screamed the same phrase at him over and over, an obscenity preceded by the words "not today," and that it became her battle cry.

She got out. Bystanders who heard the screaming helped hold the door shut, trapping Steiner inside until police arrived. She left with a gash above her eyebrow and bru*ses across her face and arms.

Herron posted photos of her injuries on Instagram along with an account of what happened. The post spread worldwide. She credited a 2-hour self-defense class she had taken 3 weeks earlier.

Steiner was a level 3 s*x offender with prior convictions for a**aulting women in Arizona.

He pleaded guilty and was sentenced in March 2018 to an indeterminate term starting at 36 months, at his own request for the maximum. He d*ed in prison later that year.

On July 17, 2022, 20-year-old Jonathan Sapirman walked out of a food court restroom at Greenwood Park Mall in Indiana and opened fire with a rifle.

He had spent more than an hour inside, and police said he was carrying two rifles, a handg*n and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

He fatally sh*t Victor Gomez, 30, then turned into the food court and k*lled Pedro Pineda, 56, and his wife Rosa Mirian Rivera de Pineda, 37.

A 22-year-old woman was hit in the leg, and a b*llet fragment struck a 12-year-old girl in the back as she ran for an exit.

Elisjsha Dicken, 22, was shopping with his girlfriend about 40 yards away.

He told her to get down, drew the handg*n he was legally carrying under Indiana's permitless carry law, and fired 10 rounds. 8 of them hit Sapirman, who collapsed and d*ed trying to retreat into the restroom.

Surveillance footage showed Sapirman began firing at 5:56 p.m. and was down by 5:57 p.m., 15 seconds later. Sapirman had fired 24 rounds in that time.

Police said Dicken had no law enforcement or military training and learned to sh**t from his grandfather.

Greenwood Police Chief Jim Ison called him tactically sound and said he waved people toward the exit behind him as he moved in. Prosecutors filed no charges against him.
