Mr. Joshua M. Freeman (July 27, 1964- December 14,2006) was an Ittō Tenshin-ryū Renshi(ー刀天心流錬士), Yamate-ryū Sandan (山手流参段), and Goseki-ryu makideshi.

He gave selflessly. He understood what it meant to be a part of something greater than oneself—a rare quality.

Family man, businessman, philanthropist, and Green Beret.

We extend our sincere condolences to all whose lives he touched and our deepest sympathies to his family.

This evening's aikijutsu class had only mudansha in attendance, and we took advantage of the opportunity to get in a lot of ukemi practice. A good round of "Ukemi Tag" is a great way to get in a lot of reps of various kinds of ukemi while keeping class fun and interesting. Ukemi, which includes techniques used to fall safely, is a vital skill both when escaping a technique and when slipping on an icy sidewalk. #武道 #武術 #剣道 #剣術 #合気道 #合気術 #柔術 #刀 #日本刀

While the 2023 Taikai has passed, the experience continues to shape us. On behalf of the deshi of the Ittō Tenshin-ryū, thank you, Sensei, for the wisdom and centerlessness with which you lead this storied tradition into the present and beyond, being the example that a swordsman is more than a man with a sword—allowing deshi to experience the profound and powerful teachings of this tradition directly and openly in a manner that permeates and informs life.

If one statement could encapsulate this weekend, it would be the same we have repeated for generations, "We few, we happy few, we band of brothers."

To us; and those like us!

The 2024 Ittō Tenshin-ryū Taikai is going to be a big one!

The River of Life Dōjō is pleased to host the 2023 Ittō Tenshin-ryū® Kenjutsu Taikai over the weekend of November 11th and 12th, 2023. This year's theme will focus on the Kihon Kumitachi and associated teachings.

Anyone interested in the Japanese way of the sword will draw great value from the event. While the cultural context in which these fighting traditions developed no longer exists, teachings to address conflict and strategy are as relevant today as they were at their inception. Principles for human performance and spiritual development are timeless.

The primary purpose of the Ittō Tenshin-ryū is to develop a powerful and orderly being.

Whether you are new to Japanese martial arts or are an old hand, know that the Ittō Tenshin-ryū welcomes all who possess the hunger to learn and the spirit to facilitate that desire.

Great Falls Budokan was fortunate to have a number of students attend this retreat in California - a fantastic experience for all.

Essence (A review of the 2023 intensive.) — Taseki Publications For six days we explored aspects of each ryū, beginning at 8 am with Zen keiko, and then taking two hours each for Itto-tenshin ryū, Yamate-ryū, and Goseki-ryū. We finished in the evening and enjoyed a home-cooked meal, a cigar, and each other’s company. Each ryū has a different flavor, but t...

Registration is now open.

The San Diego Budōkan is pleased to host the 2023 Ittō Tenshin-ryū®, Yamate-ryū®, & Goseki-ryū® retreat. Over six days, participants can participate in twenty-three periods of instruction (forty hours) with additional informal training opportunities between planned sessions.

In addition to Ryu-specific training sessions, each day will begin with an hour of zen training. In our traditions, we make no distinction in importance between physical, psychological, and spiritual exercises.

While participants are encouraged to attend the event in its entirety, we understand that with today's demands, this may be challenging. Therefore, participants may elect to participate on a daily and session basis.

While this retreat will be meaningful for the deshi of these traditions, anyone interested in the Japanese way of the sword or aikijutsu will draw great value from the event. While the cultural context in which these fighting traditions developed no longer exists, teachings to address conflict and strategy are as relevant today as they were at their inception. Principles for human performance and spiritual development are timeless.

Fredrick John Lovret
July 1, 1941 - May 17, 2015

Lovret Sensei was highly intelligent and the most aware and intense human being I have ever met. He was an uncompromising gentleman, with unwavering resolve. He taught about conflict and life through the medium of strategy and swordsmanship. He taught that "a swordsman is more than just a man with a sword."

It is rare to encounter a person where the space between who they are and what they do no longer exists. Where the observer and the observed, become one. It forces one to reflect.

Kata and the United States Marine Corps
By Joseph Simms

For those who may question the value of kata (形, prearranged exercises) in martial traditions, consider this:

When the United States Marine Corps, a storied martial tradition with over 247 years of experience in the art of war, demonstrates its military prowess, it does so by sending a platoon of Marines, clad in dress blues, silently performing precision close order drill, demonstrating the finest in professionalism, esprit de corps, and discipline.

"The object of close order drill is to teach Marines by exercise to obey orders and to do so immediately in the correct way." (MCO 5060.20)

Kata has many purposes, but instilling discipline is a damn fine one!

This statement addresses transmission and licensing within the Ittō Tenshin-ryū® and the Yamate-ryū®.

Under Rajguru Sensei's direction, I have handled our tradition's day-to-day administration for the past several years. Therein, I have addressed situations in which people misrepresented their authority and ability to transmit the Ittō Tenshin-ryū (sometimes referred to as simply Tenshin-ryū) and the Yamate-ryū. Occasionally, well-intentioned people are impacted.

As has always been our way, we welcome all who possess the hunger to learn and the spirit to facilitate that desire.

Transmission and Licensing Within the Ittō Tenshin-ryū® and Yamate-ryū®

The purpose of these traditions is not to perpetuate a set of physical techniques or to preserve a cultural asset but to develop a powerful and orderly being.

While teaching a physical technique is easily repeatable and measurable, transmitting a way of being is not. The opportunity to realize the tradition's teachings requires exposure to the following mechanisms of transmission:

-Techniques.
-Oral and written teachings.
-The headmaster (the living embodiment of the tradition).

The headmaster of the Ittō Tenshin-ryū is the only person with the authority to issue a teaching license. The same is true for both grades and teaching licenses within the Yamate-ryū.

Yamate-ryū®

The Yamate-ryu began as a family martial art. It is a direct descendant of the Daito-ryu and remains oriented toward its original purpose.

“The first mention of aiki is found in the ancient scrolls of Japanese sword schools. It is a natural thing and has been around as long as life itself; however, it is only in the dojo that a formalized method for its development may be found. Not in all dojo, however. Only those teaching the older and more traditional ryu have it. In such a dojo they regard techniques of combat merely as vehicles for developing aiki.”

(Note: In 1941 the Butokukai, the leading martial arts group of the time, defined aiki as an intrinsic part of all classical bujutsu.)

Learn strategy in 2023!

All that is required to enroll is a sincere desire to learn, athletic clothing, and a four-foot stick.

To learn strategy, you must go beyond the intellectual and apply it. You must get your hands dirty!

This online course will explore strategy through the vehicle of Japanese swordsmanship. The practice of forms exemplifying a particular strategy will help you realize its essence. Then, you may apply it at will.

Join us as we explore the strategies outlined in The Way and The Power: Secrets of Japanese Strategy by F.J. Lovret. (Available through Amazon or your favorite bookstore.)

Each week during 2023, we will explore a new strategy. Participants are welcome to join at any time during the year.

Great Falls Budōkan in Sterling, VA will host the Fall 2022 Taikai over the weekend of Nov 5 and 6. See below for registration details.

The Ittō Tenshin-ryū® is in its 6th decade of practice in the United States. Very few traditions of Japanese Swordsmanship can make that claim.

Fredrick Lovret brought the tradition to the U.S. in the 1960s. Today the Headmaster is Mr. Arvid Rajguru.

Over this time, the tradition has informed thousands of people through direct experience and writings, sharing teachings on mental attitude, conflict, human performance, and strategy.

Few maintain, most come and go--all are impacted. In many cases, our teachings remain foundational no matter where the waves of life take them.

Studying the Ittō Tenshin-ryū is to pe*****te the essence of conflict and reality. It is not easy; it will challenge your "self" to its core. It is an individual journey of struggle and joy, shared with brethren.

Join us on November 5 & 6, 2022, in Sterling, Virginia, as we explore the journey of a disciple of the Ittō Tenshin-ryū.

In the beginning of your training, you are a man with a sword. Then, after several years of training, you become a swordsman. The physical and mental differences between these two states are easy to see and understand. However, there is a third level. In the third stage, you are no longer a swordsman, you are a sword. - The Way and The Power: Secrets of Japanese Strategy, by Fredrick Lovret.
