Fast Lane Racing ~ 2021 That’s a Wrap!
Team Captain: Rick Beggs
As I’m leaving Daytona, I can’t help but think how this season didn’t turn out as planned. Fast Lane Racing was looking to repeat last year’s winning season, instead we took second or third in the ASRA Team Challenge GTU Championship with a Fourth-Place overall finish
Here’s a recap of our Daytona weekend…
Thursday - practice day - Jason Gibbons and I spent time helping Mr. Ulrich and his Team Hammer crew with their Advanced Riding School & Track Day. Approximately 15 students attended race school with another ~40 in the street rider group. The excitement helped kick start our day off just right. I highly recommend you sign up for the Team Hammer experience if it’s offered in your area. You will learn something new & it’s money we’ll spent. You won’t be disappointed.
Friday - Day two - Team Challenge Day!!
We had two practice sessions before it was our time to play. We added Ben Walters on our main Fast Lane Racing (FLR) Team 1, with Brad Moser on FLR 2 and Jason Gibbons on FLR 3. FLR teams 2 & 3 signed up to knock off laps in preparation for the upcoming Spring 2022 Daytona 200.
It’s Showtime - I decided to start the race since Ben had only ridden a few laps on my Kawi. When the green flag dropped, I got a good start and finished lap one in 6th. This position didn’t last long once the unlimited class bikes hit the banking and started to pass right on by. Here’s where it gets fun for me to decide which bikes to draft off and which bikes to pass. I relied on my EBC Brakes for passing into turn one and my Pirelli tires for the traction needed to brake hard & deep into the corners. About 17 laps in, the fuel light started to blink so I came for more VP MR 12 fuel and the rider exchange. After a quick fill-up, Ben Walters took off. Five laps later, a red flag. Ben came in, we topped off the bike, replaced the rear Pirelli tire, and finished up just in time for the restart. I’m back up, and this time, I was finally comfortable and my lap times improved. My Lextek Titanium exhaust had me getting 169 miles an hour out of a stock Kawasaki 636. The red flag helped us make up time, but it wasn’t enough for a podium finish this season. FLR ended up finishing the race fourth overall or so we thought. Fourth was posted as final on the wall, then two hours later, an updated post showed us finishing up in sixth place. Not sure what happened with that??
Saturday - We each had three sprints, and yes, I’m counting the GTU race as a sprint. In practice, I crashed going into the chicane which damaged both sides of my bike, ripped off both handlebars, and tore up my right thumb pretty bad, too. Thanks again to Taichi leathers and Arai helmets for passing yet another crash test. We managed to get the bike back together with the help of Hell Yeah Racing and made it to the track for the GTU race. I missed the warm-up lap but made the start. I was racing on cold tires with sand still on them! It was a little scary at first, but I got through it and by the second lap, I was up to speed. 11th place finish
MW Super Sport Expert - Started in the second row. When the flag dropped, I took off and got out in front of everybody for the first two or three turns before getting passed. Then it turned into another game of which bikes to draft and which bikes to pass. 11th place finish.
F40 Middleweight - Started in the front row and led the entire first lap! Then, the faster bikes were up to speed and passed me. Passing and re-passing made it a blast. 4th place finish.
Well, 2021 didn’t turn out as we had hoped with a repeat, but it was still fun-fun-fun!
There are so many people to thank for their continued support which allows us to do what we love. I hope I don’t leave anyone out…
