Artemis Pilates, an in-home studio, is located in the Potomac Falls/Cascades section of Sterling, VA. Lisa Ianson, owner of Artemis Pilates, has 20 years experience in the fitness industry and has been practicing Pilates for over 5 years.

She is a Graduate of Body Arts and Science International (BASI) Comprehensive Teacher Training Program. She is also a member of Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) and an Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) Certified Group Exercise Instructor.

Feel Good Free Class with Rael!

Do you know why the number of repetitions is low in Pilates鉂

Joseph Pilates spoke of mindless repetition; I like that term because I believe that a high rate of repetition invariably becomes mindless and produces diminishing returns.

You can practice an exercise routine that is based on a high number of repetitions, with no real focus or control, and it becomes mindless as opposed to mindful.

馃Being mindful in each exercise and each repetition is the goal. In order to achieve this, both physically and mentally, I recommend a limited number of repetitions, usually 5 to 10, depending on the intensity and complexity of the movement. The more complex the movement, the fewer the repetitions required. Use the low end of the scale for the very difficult and complex repertoire, and the high end (10 repetitions, still relatively low compared to many typical endurance-based workouts) for the fundamental work.

One reason profound effects are achieved from so few repetitions is the precision with which Pilates movements are executed and the resulting recruitment of the appropriate muscles. When many repetitions are done, compensations often creep in, other muscles (usually larger, superficial ones) take over and the effect on the desired muscles 馃挭 is minimal at best. Other negative effects of doing excessive repetitions are fatigue, wear and tear on the joints, boredom and in some instances, injury. Pilates encapsulates the concept of less is more (quality versus quantity), which holds the key to deeper work, enhanced performance and in many cases better results.
