This week, our volleyball community lost one of its greatest visionaries. Dean Shumway, the founder of the Northern Virginia Volleyball Association passed away peacefully by his family. Among many other accomplishments for the volleyball community, Dean founded the Northern Virginia Volleyball Association (NVVA) in 1997, with the goal of growing volleyball in the area. Dean had the vision to help kids start loving volleyball at a young age, and that vision led him to create NVVA’s Loudoun Youth Volleyball, a fall league that today has more than 1400 participants. Through his vision, the Virginia Volleyball Center, our state-of-the-art volleyball facility was also created. Today, NVVA provides volleyball opportunities to more than 2500 families per year and is proudly continuing to accomplish Dean’s vision and dream.
“ Last time I had a chance to spend some time with Dean was on July 14th, 2017, almost exactly 3 years ago. His passion and knowledge not only of volleyball as a sport but of how it can influence kids and their growth was always fascinating to me. He always made it clear that his goal for NVVA was to be the place kids fall in love with volleyball. Dean shook my hand and said he was very pleased I was fulfilling his vision. This has been my proudest moment at NVVA.” says NVVA President/CEO, Rodrigo Gomes.
The Northern Virginia Volleyball Association sends the Shumway family its deepest condolences. We invite those of you who have had the pleasure to spend time with Dean, to share your stories in the comments below.
When coaching our athletes, one of the most important principles we like to teach is that simple movements are better than complex movements. We believe this principle in reality applies to any sport. When kicking a soccer ball, throwing a football or passing a volleyball, the simpler the movement, the easier it will be to repeat.
How do you train to keep your movements simple?
Congratulations coach Mari!!!

The JVA is proud to announce the 2021 Ultra Ankle® JVA Watch List featuring over 1,900 girls indoor junior volleyball athletes from nearly 130 JVA member clubs from across the US and Canada. The players nominated are among the best in the nation in their age division this season.
"Volleyball student-athletes across the country have had an entire year of training, competition, and recruiting deeply impacted by the pandemic. We feel this year's Ultra Ankle® JVA Watch List identifies not only the outstanding talent but also the resiliency and dedication among these student-athletes, as well as the commitment of the JVA club leaders. These young athletes from all areas of the country demonstrate that our sport is immensely strong and the future looks bright" states JVA Executive Director Jenny Hahn.
The 2021 Ultra Ankle® JVA Watch List honorees will be eligible for selection to the 2021 Ultra Ankle® JVA All-National Team in June. Although this season has looked quite different from a competition and training standpoint, we are excited and thankful to keep an eye on the 2021 Ultra Ankle® JVA Watch List athletes as they compete in the second half of the indoor season.

New LYV High School format For more than 20 years, Loudoun Youth Volleyball has been providing volleyball opportunities for girls and boys from elementary to high school ages. Are you ready to showcase your skills? 🤩🤩🤩
Registration is open for our College Prep Camp! Train with NCAA collegiate coaches from both Virginia schools, and out-of-state.
Since LYV began, we’ve worked to share our love for volleyball with the community. Over the years our program has grown and been able to serve as the starting point for over 20,000 athletes in their volleyball careers! We have continuously refined our coaching processes in working with young athletes allowing players to not only train their skills but to have fun while doing it. Most high school players in Loudoun County found their passion for volleyball starting with LYV Elementary and Middle School programs, many of whom have advanced to play at a collegiate level. By integrating community, club, and school sports, we’ve been able to create a program that puts less pressure on kids to win, and more emphasis on playing to find joy.
How a youth league helped build volleyball in Loudoun County Loudoun Youth Volleyball (LYV) was created in 1997 as a recreational volleyball league whose purpose is to teach and promote the sport of volleyball and good sportsmanship. We work to show that sports can be used to help build a healthy community, by making activities accessible for all children, re
