Lessons From 23 Seasons

A fellow coach adjusted my crown this week without ever saying a word.

She decided to clean and decorate the coaches’ break room and hung up pieces of CAO history—old timelines, milestone moments, and memories from send-offs throughout the years. I never expected to walk in and see them.

For a few moments, I just stood there looking at the wall.

It was a gentle reminder that when you’re busy building, surviving, and carrying the weight of leadership, you don’t always stop to look at what you’ve already built.

And it brought me back to a memory right before tryouts…

A parent looked me in my face and asked,
“Is this how you want your legacy to end?”

The question was in reference to athletes choosing to try out at other gyms.

And if I’m honest, the question didn’t offend me.

It revealed a misunderstanding of what legacy actually is.

Let’s define legacy.

Legacy is not determined by disgruntled parents. It is not defined by people who move in herds. It is not shaped by indecision, disloyalty, or people who can only think in the emotion of the present moment.

Legacy is built over time.
It is forged through consistency, innovation, resilience, sacrifice, and impact.

Twenty-three years of building, breaking ceilings, and doing what many said couldn’t be done—that is legacy.

My legacy is winning on every major stage this industry has to offer.

My legacy is building a Worlds program and stepping into that arena twice—as the only all-girl Black team in Atlanta to do so.

My legacy is creating the first and only Cheer HBCU Combine—opening doors, building pipelines, and changing what representation in this industry looks like.

My legacy is sweeping Summit.

My legacy is being recognized among the best—from NCA Hall of Fame honors to being honored at the Capitol as a Woman of Honor, to being recognized for impact and innovation.

My legacy is twenty-three years of showing up, evolving, creating, surviving, and still standing.

That is legacy.

And truthfully, it took everything in me not to respond with a question of my own:

What is the legacy of the gym you’re choosing?

What ceilings have they broken?
What paths have they created?
What has their trailblazing actually produced for this industry?

Because legacy is not about what feels trendy today.
It is not about following crowds.
It is not about chasing what appears shiny in a moment of uncertainty.

Legacy is about sustained impact.
It is about creating something so undeniable that years later, the evidence still speaks for itself.

People often confuse transition with decline.

Just because people leave does not mean something is ending.
Sometimes it means space is being made for alignment.
Sometimes pruning is necessary for elevation.
Sometimes the people who leave are not abandoning a legacy—they are simply removing themselves from the next chapter of it.

My legacy does not end because people make temporary decisions.

A legacy like mine doesn’t end.
It evolves.
It expands.
It continues to blaze trails long after the noise settles.

And after 23 seasons, if there is one thing I know for certain—

You cannot erase what has already been etched into history.

There are some hearts that leave a mark on everyone they meet. Kylie was one of those beautiful souls. Her smile, her quiet strength, and the light she carried will never be forgotten.

Today, we honor her life, cherish the memories she gave us, and hold close the love she shared with so many. Though her time here was far too short, her impact will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Please keep her family and everyone who loved her in your prayers during this difficult time.

Forever loved. Forever remembered. Forever missed. 🤍🕊️

It’s try out season- so the message for today is: Do Not Chase People.

After 23 seasons in this industry, I’ve learned a lesson that applies to business, leadership, relationships, and life.

People are going to be people.

They are going to do exactly what they want to do.

For years, I’ve told my coaches “Be good to kids, but be good to yourself too.” As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that advice isn’t just for coaches. It’s for owners, leaders, and anyone responsible for protecting something they’ve built.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is taking other people’s behavior personally.
When a family walks into your gym after leaving another one, welcome them. Make them feel comfortable. Give them a fresh start.

But pay attention.

If the entire conversation is spent tearing down the last place—the uniforms, the coaches, the competitions, the owners, the culture—understand that there is a strong chance you will eventually become the next story they tell.

I’ve watched it happen over and over.

Someone leaves one gym praising the next. They spend months talking about how they finally found “home.” Then the first disagreement happens. A placement they don’t like. A correction their child receives. A policy they don’t agree with.
Suddenly, the place they once praised becomes the place they criticize.

The gym changed.

The pattern didn’t.

As an owner, I made a decision a long time ago. I don’t spend my time asking people where they came from. I don’t post indirect messages on social media hoping someone feels targeted. I don’t believe in creating division or stirring up drama to make a point.

Leadership requires more maturity than that.

I’ve also learned that fighting over athletes is exhausting and unnecessary.

There are kids everywhere.

Some may cheer with you.

Some may not.

Some will leave.

Some will come.

If I have to chase someone, convince them to stay, or talk them into choosing my program, then maybe they simply aren’t meant to be part of what I’m building.

I’ve adopted a simple philosophy:
What’s for me is for me.

That mindset has brought me a lot of peace.

I’ve also watched something else over the years.

I’ve seen people think they were winning because they took an athlete, a coach, or a family from someone else. I’ve watched people celebrate temporary victories built on ego.

Then life has a way of balancing the scales.
Not because I wished it on them.
But because character has a way of revealing itself over time.

After 23 seasons, I never believed success comes from taking what belongs to someone else.

I believe success comes from building something so authentic that the right people naturally find it.

So if I could leave one lesson for other owners and leaders, it would be this:

Be kind.

Be professional.

Protect your peace.

Don’t gossip.

Don’t chase.

Don’t beg.

Don’t build your brand by tearing down someone else’s.

People will do what they want to do.
Your job is to stay true to your values anyway.

Twenty-three seasons later, I can honestly say this:I don’t chase people. I build. And what is meant for me always finds me.

People like the trophy winning reels? Do they like the work to get to the trophy reels?

Unlimited Tumbling includes a HT workout with light dumbbell training. The fun part is we throw drills in that the athletes can apply to tumbling and stunting. This was so much 🤩 fun because Eryn is a BEAST.

Protecting the Narrative: A Lesson I Learned Later Than I Should Have

For years, I sat back and said nothing while people tried to tear my brand apart.

Many of those same people once sat across from me in meetings. We had conversations. We tried to work through issues. Some chose to leave. Others were released.

Looking back, I’ve learned a lot about accountability, leadership, difficult decisions, and what it truly means to protect what you’ve built.

One lesson I learned later than I should have was this:

Protecting the narrative matters.

For a long time, I believed taking the high road meant silence.

I thought letting disgruntled people expose themselves through their own bitterness was enough. I believed if I stayed quiet, my work would speak for itself.

I thought the experiences we provide, the skills we build, the opportunities we create, the wins we’ve earned, and the impact we’ve made would always be louder than the noise.

And for a while, that worked.

But silence only works for so long when there are people committed to creating confusion.

When narratives are intentionally shaped behind closed doors.

When conversations distort reality.

When half-truths are repeated so often that people begin to mistake repetition for truth.

The reality is this:

Word of mouth is one of the most powerful marketing tools in any business.

When false narratives are left unchecked, they do more than create noise.

They create confusion.

And confusion can become costly.

As I listened to conversations and read what was being said, I noticed something important:

The accusations were rarely about actual business failure.

Rarely was it:

* CAO failed to deliver what was promised.
* CAO failed to create opportunities.
* CAO lacked value, service, exposure, or experiences.

Because the facts simply do not support that.

More often, the complaints were rooted in emotion, unmet personal expectations, disappointment, or motives that had very little to do with the integrity of what was built.

If you are an owner, leader, or visionary, that kind of noise can shake your confidence if you allow it to.

There were moments I asked God what I was supposed to do because I was tired of always being the bigger person.

I know vengeance belongs to Him.

But I also knew there had to be a healthy and productive way for me to do my part.

The answer was simple:

Use my voice.

Not to argue.

Not to defend.

Not to go back and forth.

But to share the lesson.

To tell the story.

To speak truth with wisdom and integrity.

As business owners, we often sit through conversations where people can list every complaint, every inconvenience, and every criticism.

Rarely do they acknowledge all that is right.

Rarely do they mention the lives impacted, the doors opened, the standards created, the community built, or the sacrifices made behind the scenes.

So I did something different.

I sat down and wrote out everything I have built—not from ego, but from reflection.

The impact made inside my gym walls.

The impact made outside of them.

The ceilings broken.

The spaces created.

The community served.

And in that moment, I was reminded of something important:

People consumed with tearing down what you built are rarely focused on building something of their own.

That perspective changes everything.

What I know now is this:

Silence is not always strength.

Sometimes strength is using your voice with wisdom.

Not to explain yourself to everyone.

Not to convince people committed to misunderstanding you.

But to ensure truth has a place in the conversation.

Because if you built it with integrity…

If you led with purpose…

If your work has created real impact…

Then your story deserves to be told by the person who lived it.

Not every battle requires a response.

But every legacy deserves stewardship.

Protect your peace.

Protect your purpose.

Protect your narrative.

Thus, Lessons from 23 Seasons…

The quiet before the new begins. ✨

Today, these floors breathe before they come alive again.

A new season. New team practices. Rush Week. Summer camp. New opportunities to build, grow, and become.

There’s something powerful about this moment — the stillness before the sound, the pause before the purpose moves.

Taking a deep breath and stepping into this season covered in God’s grace, favor, and fresh vision for Chapter XXIII: Sisterhood.

What looks quiet now is simply preparation for everything God is about to do.
