Artificial Iranian reef building! Give it a couple years growth and dive dive dive!

Did you know the U.S. Navy might be creating some of the best fish habitat on the planet right now in the Persian Gulf?

During the current conflict with Iran, reports say around 17 Iranian naval vessels have already been sunk or destroyed, including multiple warships and even a submarine. When ships go to the bottom they don’t just disappear, they become structure. And structure is everything to fish. A steel ship sitting on an otherwise flat seafloor suddenly provides hiding places, current breaks, and hard surfaces where algae, barnacles, and other marine life grow. That brings in baitfish looking for food and shelter, and where bait goes the predators follow. Give it a little time and what used to be a warship starts looking an awful lot like a pretty nice artificial reef.

Ironically, fisheries managers all over the world intentionally sink ships to build fish habitat. Turns out the ocean doesn’t really care whether a vessel was sunk on purpose or by a missile, either way it usually ends up crawling with marine life. If fish could vote, they might just say the Navy is doing a fantastic reef-building program over there. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
