Another Strong Showing for SCC Men’s Tennis

The Sun City Center USTA men’s competitive doubles team hosted the second HCC team on Saturday, August 22nd for their 8th match of the summer season. Despite the blistering sun and the fact that they are still playing up a level and in an 18 & Over league, our men held their own and pushed two of the three matches to a tiebreak.

Mark Nelson and Kevin Johnson battled HCC’s top team in a highly competitive match. After dropping the first set 3/6, Nelson and Johnson came roaring back to take the second set 6/3, only to fall in tight tiebreaker for the match.

The big winners of the day were Joe Norton and Michael Nugent, who came out hard and took the first set decidedly against two young players. But their opponents rallied to take the second set and push the match to a nail-biting tiebreaker. “When it hit 9-8, we absolutely were not going to lose the next point,” Norton said. And he was right.

The depth of the HCC bench was on display in line three where Terry Payton and Henry Gales took on a pairing that could have played in the first line. Payton and Gales stayed in it to the end and gave them a run for their money intimately falling in two.

The SCC men will conclude their summer season with an away match at Davis Island next week. Recruiting for the Fall season, which will begin in mid-September, is underway. Interested players are encouraged to reach out to Kevin Johnson at [email protected].

SCC Men Come in Hot Against Davis Island

The Sun City Center men’s USTA competitive doubles team hosted one of two teams from Davis Island on Saturday, August 15th in the seventh match of the summer season. Our men continue to keep these matches highly competitive despite the fact that they are playing up a level and in an 18 & Over league. Not even the heat and humidity could stop them.

In a match that lasted nearly three hours, Kevin Johnson and Qin Yang pushed Davis Island’s top team to a tiebreaker. After dropping the first set 5/7, they stayed in it and took the second set 7/5, only to fall in a tight tiebreaker for the match.

Mark Nelson and Mike Mazzucco also held their own through painfully long rallies against two young guys and gave them a close run in the first set before dropping the second. “I like that these guys don’t hold back at all with us, and I love that we are stepping up and showing them that we are real competition,” said Nelson.

And the fans are loving it, too. Despite the heat, fans filled the bleachers and filled the air with gasps and cheers. Supporter Burtie McPhee, who stuck it out and cheered to the end, commented that the match really was so much closer than the score showed: “I thought that was something they just said in the paper, but it’s true.” It’s also clear that the opposing teams are impressed, and maybe a little intimidated, to see our sense of community on display when so many SCC residents show up for the team.

The men will continue their season with one more home match on Saturday the 22nd and invite everyone to come out and cheer them on. The last match of their season is away on the 29th, and we will be sure to tell you all about it here.

SCC Men Battle Cheval at Home

The Sun City Center men’s USTA competitive doubles team hosted Cheval on Saturday, August 8th for the sixth match of their summer season. Despite playing up a level and in an 18 & Over league, the SCC men continued to hold their own and put on a show.

After dropping a close first set to Cheval’s top team, Kevin Johnson and Mike Mazzucco came roaring back to a 5-0 lead in the second set, only to fall in a tight tiebreaker.

Joe Norton and Michael Nugent faced off with two young, tall guys yet again, but they went toe-to-toe and pushed multiple games to deuce.

The match of the day was won by Brian Gray and Qin Yang, who took control from the start and shut their opponents down in a decisive 6-2, 6-3 victory. Gray credited their disciplined, patient approach.

“We played high IQ tennis,” Gray said. “We took a lot of risks, but we took them when we were up 40-love, not when it was 30-30.”

The men will continue their season at home for the next two weeks and invite everyone to come out and cheer them on. The USTA Fall leagues are now organizing, and teams will play both singles and doubles matches starting in mid-September. 3.5 players who are interested in joining the team should reach out to anyone on the team or come back to a match and introduce themselves.

SCC Men Take on Top USTA Team

The Sun City Center men’s competitive doubles team welcomed Hillsborough (Community) College to our courts on Saturday, August 1st for the fifth match in their 2026 USTA summer season.

With no 55+ or 40+ summer leagues and no options for men’s 6.5 or 7.0 doubles, the SCC men have been playing in the 18 & Over 7.5 Combo league.

The HCC team, which draws players from throughout and beyond Hillsborough County, regularly maintains the top ranking across levels and seasons, and they brought their big dogs down to play our boys.

“We know these guys are young, we’re playing up a level, it’s hot, and they’re the top seed, but we showed up and are ready to play,” said captain Kevin Johnson.

Qin Yang and Kevin Johnson took on the top pair and managed to pull one game each set before the rain hit. Joe Norton and Michael Nugent also had a strong showing and took multiple games to deuce.

Brian Gray and Mark Nelson were in a tight 5-6 first set when the game was called for rain, so their opponents will have to come back and finish the match to determine a winner.

Despite knowing what they are up against each week, Michael Nugent said he is loving these matches: “Normally we can get away with a few errors, but these guys punish us every time.” Nugent doesn’t mind though, and said the team is really growing from the challenge.

As Sun City Center continues their 7.5 Combo season at home for the next three weeks, everyone is invited to come out and cheer on our underdogs!
