Big news, fellow OUAZ students and residents of Surprise! Ottawa University, in Surprise, Arizona, has recently welcomed three new coaches to lead the esteemed wrestling, Ultimate, and cycling Competitive Club Sports teams. Ottawa’s Club Sports programs are great opportunities for students to get active and meet new people. These competitive teams even offer scholarships!

Ben DeJarnett, the club wrestling coach and director, began wrestling about 17 years ago and has coached wrestling teams for the past year. Coach DeJarnett is a fellow Ottawa Spirit, hailing from Ottawa University in Kansas where he served as a captain of the OUKS men’s wrestling team. After injuring his ACL he continued his contribution to the team as a student coach. OUAZ’s men’s wrestling recently competed in their first wrestling tournament on January 19th, at Dixie State, where several of the teammates had multiple wins. Coach DeJarnett says that the competitions are great when it comes to building the team’s comradery and he hopes to capitalize on their early success by hopefully going on to win a national championship. The wrestling team is actively recruiting athletes, and a women’s wrestling team is currently in the works at Ottawa’s Surprise campus.

The men’s and women’s combined Ultimate frisbee club team their new coach, Coy Springer. Coach Springer began playing Ultimate and competing in tournaments while a student at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville. While playing, he fell in love with the community aspect of the sport, as well as the “family you gain” from being involved in the fast-paced activity. In addition to coaching, Coach Springer has an active recruiting schedule with travel to Texas, Colorada, and Utah. Ottawa University Arizona is one of the few universities to offer scholarships to students playing in their Ultimate league. With a co-ed (men and women’s team), there are plenty of options for getting involved in the sport, no matter your level of experience. “Ultimate is more of a strategy game than a game that requires skill,” Coach Springer says. Students looking to compete or just to have fun with the team on the field can contact Coach Springer, whose goal is to expand the team to 12-15 people. OUAZ’s Ultimate team is a member of the USA Ultimate Division 3 League.
