Monroe 16/17u girls team post 2 of 2. This is a long post but worth the read.
We love our players and team. Unfortunately on the 2nd day of the tournament 3 of our 4 players couldn't make it back to the tournament. We were looking at a forfeit due to that for not having enough players. We missed having them that day but respect why they were not able to come back that next day.
Coach Shawn and his friend Coach Matthew's from Team Cerberus were both at the tournament. Cerberus had a 15u girls team in the same tournament. Coach Shawn talked about having the girls come play up in the 16/17u split bracket. They agreed to come help so the athlete who was there could still play in her game. The director of the tournament and the other team "Dunkin' Daddies" agreed to not have us forfeit but to play. This athlete is Coach Shawns daughter who is 13 years old. She has severe Autism and was playing up 4 years older then her age. She was upset and didn't want to play right away. All the girls from Dunkin'. Daddy's, the girls from Cerberus, Coach Matthew's, and Coach Shawn came over with positive encouragement at the same time to our athlete. Everybody tried to cheer her up. The girls from dunkin' daddy's even said they would pay her if she made a basket on them. She got out there and had a lot of fun. She shot over them a few times and almost won the money. What we saw from our community of athletes not just our own was an amazing show of support for an athlete who was upset and who has special needs.
The Dunkin' daddy's team was an amazing team of local varsity high school players. They were great competition for all these girls who were playing up. We are extremely grateful for all the players from Dunkin' Daddy's, Cerberus, and Coach Matthew's for all you did for us on day two of the tournament. We finished the tournament taking 4th place in the bracket. That moment in time is one that will stick with our team for a lifetime. It goes to show that a small act of kindness can make a huge positive. impact on somebody's life.
We appreciate all of our girl players who played on day 1 for all the hard work they put in on the court. We are greatful for y'all. We are also greatful to all the players in our bracket for being great competition.
