Thank you to Ayoka Afrikan Drum and Dance Ensemble for sharing your knowledge with our students this week!

Our first year students had the exciting opportunity to have a full week of fun masterclasses with these incredible artists. Ayoka Afrikan Drum and Dance is a non-profit organization that organizes and promotes activities that are centered around cultural development for youth and adults.

Ayoka Afrikan Drum and Dance Ensemble shares the culture of Afrika with the world through various humanitarian efforts and programs that are community based, cross-cultural, developmental, and educational. These programs enrich the lives of all participants (children, families, elders, etc.) while improving cultural understanding and initiatives that are immersed in collective progress.

Join the School of Dance Faculty!

The Florida State University School of Dance seeks a dynamic, collaborative leader to fill an Open Rank faculty position in Lighting and Visual Design while serving as Director of Production. This hybrid faculty-administrative position combines teaching, creative research, student mentorship, production design, and oversight of the School’s production operations. The successful candidate will maintain an active program of creative and/or scholarly activity, teach undergraduate and graduate courses in lighting and visual design, mentor student artists and designers, and provide leadership for the planning, coordination, and ex*****on of all School of Dance productions.

Qualifications:
A terminal degree (M.F.A. or equivalent) in Lighting Design, Theatrical Design, Dance Production, Theatre, Dance, or a closely related field from an accredited institution. Minimum of five years of professional experience in lighting design, with significant experience designing for dance performance. Demonstrated expertise in lighting design processes, technologies, and production practices. Evidence of achievement in creative and/or scholarly work. Demonstrated commitment to teaching, mentoring, and collaborative artistic practice. Strong organizational, leadership, and project management skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
Successful university-level teaching experience. Experience supervising production operations, technical staff, and production budgets. Experience with QLab, Vectorworks software, LightWright, Eos systems, Dante software, and Paradigm. Expertise in one or more complementary areas such as: Projection or media design, Costume design, Scenic design, Filmmaking or digital media production, Musical composition or sound design, Dance technology, Related movement or dance practices. Experience working across interdisciplinary artistic environments. Demonstrated commitment to excellence and student-centered learning.

Presented over two weekends, the program offers a rich cross‑section of choreographic approaches, movement languages, and artistic perspectives.

This work will be performed as the opening of Adele Myers and Dancers– a world gone FABULOUS....presented in collaboration with Opening Nights. a world gone FABULOUS  is a live quest for a sexy future performed by Adele Myers and Dancers. The dynamite athletes of the heart amplify Myers’ signature style of robust athleticism fused with personal theatricality and wit. The new evening-length dance theater work digs into what we cherish and what we wish for as we wonder toward a better future. Miami Light Project is the lead-commissioning presenter partner for a world gone FABULOUS joined by co-commissioning presenter partners James Madison University’s School of Theater and Dance, and Opening Nights at Florida State University.

Ceclila Benitez is a recipient of the prestigious 2026 National Performance Network National Performance Network Creation Fund Award and is a Cuban American freelance dancer, choreographer, educator, and artistic administrator based in Miami, Florida. Her choreographic works span across film, proscenium, improvisation, and site-responsive performance, all with the purpose of reflecting what feels beautiful, tender, and real to both audiences and performers. Her choreography has been commissioned by various local and national companies including Mutual Dance Theatre (OH), James Madison University (VA), Bistoury Physical Theatre and Film, Syncopate Collective, PAXy, Pioneer Winter Collective: Grass Stains, Miami Light Project: Here and Now, and Miami DanceMakers.

Adele Myers is a Miami based dance maker, educator and Artistic Director of Adele Myers and Dancers (AMD),a national touring contemporary dance theater company made up of athletes of the heart.

Today Dr. Tom Welsh was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Arts Educator Award from the University of Utah !

The Arts Educator Award honors an alum who has made significant contributions in arts education. Tom Welsh (Dance) is on the Dance faculty here at Florida State University School of Dance where he teaches conditioning, kinesiology, science of dance training, reformer training, coaching, and research methods for dancers. He also teaches classes and workshops for summer dance intensives, frequently at the University of Utah. Welsh wrote “Conditioning for Dancers” to introduce dancers to the movement sciences, and he led the creation of a 23-author “Research Methods in the Dance Sciences” text to encourage research by dancers with dancers.

Welsh and his dancer-researcher students conduct and publish empirical research on healthy approaches to training dancers in national and international journals. "In short" as the Director of the U's School of Dance Melonie Murray explained, "he is largely responsible for how we currently understand how to keep dancers healthy while performing at peak levels."

He is a member of the editorial board for the “Journal of Dance Medicine & Science (JDMS),” he served 10 years as founding chair of the IADMS Research Committee (International Association for Dance Medicine & Science), and he served eight years as IADMS Board member, Vice President, President, and Immediate Past President. He received his most intensive dance training as a Modern Dance student at the University of Utah and his most intensive research training as a Behavioral Studies doctoral student at the University of Kansas.

Today marks the "graduation" of the one and only, Tyressa Judge, who has served the School of Dance as a physical therapist for over 20 years!

We can't thank her enough for all of her service to not just the School of Dance, but to all of FSU!

We will miss you Tyressa! Thank you for always taking care of us, and for teaching us to "do a little, a lot, so we can do a lot, for a little"

We wish you nothing but the best in this next chapter of retirement!
