THE 5 COMPONENTS OF PHYSICAL FITNESS
The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has updated the way we define physical fitness. The five components are:
1️⃣ CARDIORESPIRATORY FITNESS 🫀
The ability of your heart, lungs, and circulatory system to deliver oxygen during physical activity.
2️⃣ MUSCULAR FITNESS 💪
Includes muscular strength, muscular endurance, and power—your muscles’ ability to produce and sustain force and generate power when needed.
3️⃣ NEUROMOTOR FITNESS 🧠
Your ability to move efficiently, effectively, and with control. It includes qualities such as balance, agility, coordination, and movement skills.
4️⃣ FLEXIBILITY 🤸
The ability of your joints and surrounding tissues to move through an appropriate range of motion.
5️⃣ BODY COMPOSITION ⚖️
The proportion and relationship of the different components that make up your body, including fat mass and fat-free mass.
The good news?
A more complete approach to fitness means better, more well-rounded training.
Every fitness program should address all 5 components, appropriately adapted to each individual’s fitness level, goals, and needs.
Train smarter. Train for your health.
