💜”LOVE YOUR BODY AT ALL STAGES” they say. Easier said than done sometimes, right?!💜 The truth is that the season I’ve been in physically has been long, challenging, upsetting, and just plain hard. As a fitness professional, nutrition specialist, and former professional bodybuilder, I know all the things to do. But guess what?! The things I know aren’t working right now, and it’s frustrating (swipe 👈 to see the scale over the last few months).
I knew I needed to make a change, not because the scale kept climbing, but when the thoughts I started having about my body turned consistently negative…
💜I started to feel self-conscious when seeing people I hadn’t seen in several years after moving back to Florida and wondered if they would notice I had gained weight
💜Walking in to teach my first group fitness class back in Tampa, I was worried people wouldn’t think I looked “fit” enough to be an instructor
💜I worried men I met through online dating would think I was bigger in real life than in my pictures
💜I noticed I haven’t taken full body pictures of myself in the last few months unless I’m blocking my body or in control of the selfie (the pic in this post and in my story from today are perfect examples)
Sharing this because these thoughts are real, and they can happen to anyone (even fitness professionals and people who are typically positive 😃). The point is, DON’T make the decision to live in these negative thoughts. Notice them, and then make the decision to take the action needed to feel better (mentally and physically). Taking action for me has been prioritizing my health and reaching out to doctors and friends in the industry for guidance. My very wise cousin reminded me a few weeks ago that this is just a season, and it will pass. She is so right.
To anyone else in a challenging season right now, I feel you. It can be such a struggle. I’ll be sharing more on some of the challenges with my body this week as well as information on some of the people and resources I’ve turned to for guidance. Why is self- care important to you? I feel like I do a decent job of being consistent with self-care, but when I have a bigger reason behind it, it pushes me to prioritize it.
✌️Things really woke me up to prioritizing my health recently. My mom suffered a stroke 2 weeks ago. Being home to help with her care, I saw the physical and emotional demands of being her caregiver. My Dad was exhausted and I knew I needed to care for myself so I could show up my best physically and mentally for my family. I literally keep telling myself “Kathleen, you cannot go down right now! Get rest, eat well, take care of yourself.”
I also started (again) my third egg freezing cycle this Saturday. Financially, physically, and mentally, I would really like this round to be successful and my last. One of my doctors emphasized reducing stress to avoid a lupus flare up during this time so that I would potentially have a better outcome. No stress, got it! 👍😂 Easier said than done, but I decided to add in a few things to my self-care routine to hopefully improve my results! It’s still 2020, so stress reduction is a challenge, however, here are some things that have really helped me feel pretty good during this time.
✨SLEEP- 8 hours or more every night
✨ACUPUNCTURE- This one is new for me, but my doctor suggested it because it can help with fertility, relaxation, & autoimmune disease
✨MEDITATION- Even 5 minutes a day makes a difference
✨GRATITUDE- You can’t feel blessed and stressed! I write down at least 3 things daily
✨MOVEMENT- Adding in more long walks and yoga
✨NUTRITION- A lot of greens & unprocessed foods
✨SPA TREATMENTS- Massages and pedicures are my fave!
✨SAYING NO- Hard for me, but being mindful of social & work commitments
For me, self-care right now is about being able to show up for my family and increasing my chances of a successful egg freezing cycle. When I focus on WHY self-care is important, it helps me prioritize it. Why do you practice self-care? COMMENT BELOW 👇 and let me know!

I wanted to be able to give people the joy that exercise gave me. This dream became even more important as I realized the benefits of exercise as an adult through my experiences with weight gain, health issues, autoimmune disease, and watching my parents struggle with their health. ✨ - this conference for fitness entrepreneurs is what started it all! I met the founder who has been my business coach and source of so much knowledge and wisdom to get my business going over the years
✨ -My nutrition coach who has helped me stay healthy and energized while pursuing my dream
✨ -Branding and media experts who keep me motivated, inspired, and progressing with my business
✨ - Helped me use nutrition to heal my body from autoimmune and fertility treatments so I could be energized and feel my best to pursue my goals

🍫 🍷 MY TOP 5 HALLOWEEN CANDY & WINE PAIRINGS🍫🍷As a fitness professional, you might be expecting tips on how to manage the extra candy on hand after Halloween. However, I’m also a wine professional, so I say enjoy that candy, make it an experience, and pair it up with some vino!
🍷 KIT-KATS & MALBEC- The milk chocolate pairs well with the dark fruit flavors and hints of mocha in these wines. Try Don Miguel Gascon Malbec. Go for their Reserva Malbec if you're feeling fancy (it's a favorite).
🍷CANDY CORN & BUBBLES - The caramel notes in the candy corn will pair well with the nutty notes found in champagne and sparkling wines. Hints of honey in Prosecco also make a tasty pairing! I recommend J Brut Cuvee 20 Sparkling or La Marca Prosecco.
🍷STARBURSTS & MOSCATO- The different fruit flavors in Starbursts are a great match for the hints of sweetness in moscato. Try Mirassou or Mia Dolcea Moscato
🍷SNICKERS & ZINFANDEL- One of my favorites! The jammy flavors of Red Zinfandel are a perfect match for the milk chocolate in the Snickers bar. I suggest Ghost Pines Zinfandel or Bear Flag Zinfandel
🍷ANY CHOCOLATE CANDY & A CABERNET OR RED BLEND- most chocolate candy will taste even better with a bold Cabernet Sauvignon or red blend. Some of my favorites with chocolate this year have been Louis Martini Napa and Apothic Red Blend
If you do decide to treat yourself, just remember to drink EXTRA water, balance out the sugar with some protein and/or fiber, and try and do it on a day where you get a good workout in!
