If you own a firearm, or have trained with any legal weapon for self-defense purposes, then you should know that self-defense in today s world requires more than just physical training, it requires that you stay knowledgeable of the current laws. For 20 years, Kowkabany s Family Martial Arts has served the Westchase, Oldsmar and Tampa communities with expert instruction in traditional martial arts and reality-based self-defense. As part of our commitment to providing our students with this same level of expertise in regards to using weapons, we have invited U.S. Law Shield to put on a Gun Law Workshop on May 7, from 2:00 5:00 pm. While many who practice Every Day Carry are familiar with U.S.L.S., for those who aren t, here is what you can expect. College Bound Readiness Training! 04/21/2016

Is your high-school senior ready for college? With several of our Black Belts approaching the end of their senior year in high school, the instructors at Kowkabany’s Family Martial Arts (KFMA) can certainly relate to parents who are going through a mix of emotions as their teenagers prepare to graduate and to go off to college. As we have been teaching in Tampa for 20 years, many of our students have been with us for more than 10 and even 15 years. Our Black Belts have some advantages when it comes to starting college, as they have been training in realistic self-defense for many years, and they have learned to develop a certain awareness when they are away from home. Most of them have also trained in our Toastmasters public speaking club, which leads to an increase in confidence in new social situations. National competitors from Kowkabany’s Family Martial Arts in Tampa, Florida are preparing for the final events of the 2015-2016 ATA tournament season. The action starts with an intra-school tournament for our Tigers (pre-school kids), Karate Kids and Adults on Saturday, April 9th at our location in Monroes Business Park near Oldsmar and Westchase. This will feature the traditional Songahm forms, traditional weapons, free sparring and combat weapons sparring with students as young as age 3 through age 60. Currently, several of our KFMA competitors are on track to compete for State Titles, and the ATA Southeast District titles will be up for grabs in Dalton, Georgia on June 4th. The last ATA Regional Tournament in Florida (for this season) will be held on April 23rd in Ft. Lauderdale. We also have one student currently ranked in the Top Ten in the World. We held a special Kids Self-Defense Clinic at Kowkabany’s Family Martial Arts today, which covered topics ranging from avoiding conflicts, to using their voice as a deterrent, to practicing some simple physical defensive techniques. While we work on some aspect of self-defense in every class, today s training was focused specifically on the practical application of Taekwondo techniques when dealing with physical threats from peers as well as from adult strangers.
