"never is one so naked then before a golf ball"... Shivas Irons "golf in the Kingdom" Sharing a life time of knowledge about this great game we all play.

I was born when my father was playing the PGA Tour in the 1960's. He was often on the road and our famil, like many players families was traveling in a station wagon or RV from state to state. Dad's room mate and traveling companion in those days were Chi Chi Rodriguez, Chico Miartuz, to name a few. His coach was the legendary "wild" Bill Melhorn... By the time i was 6 we relocated from NY to Miam

The greatest Sand wedge of all time, the Wilson R-90,was developed by Eugenio Sarazano, better known as Gene Sarazen…
Why? The forged steel that was used, the weight (HEAVY), the shape and amount of the bounce is very versatile. It’s in my bag still since 86, and then it was old, made in 1932. Every sandwich that you’ve ever seen is designed off of this wedge and although some look as good as it, none feel as good as it and the 1970s if you could find one they fetched $1000-$1500 with all the technology and misinformation that lighter is better. You could probably find one for a few hundred dollars. However, be careful because if they say “the original” R-90 on them, they are not originals they were made in the 1980s.

“Wilson Advisory Staffer Gene Sarazen uses a secret weapon on his way to winning the 1932 British Open after a plane ride had inspired him to create a club head that glides smoothly through sand. Sarazen welded a piece of steel to the sole of the club and ground it producing ‘bounce’. This marked the introduction of the sand wedge and the “explosion” shot was born, and that year Wilson sold 50,000 of the club known as the R-90, the most popular sand wedge in golf.”

He was also on the first U.S. Ryder Cup team in 1927 with me and my father’s teacher “Wild” Bill Mehlhorn, who coached me from the cradle until he passed when I was 25 yrs old.
