Matthew Cunningham has been teaching tennis in Florida for over 25 years. For the last 12 he was the Director of Tennis at Harbour Island Athletic Club in Tampa, and more recently the Director at Boca Royale Golf and Country Club in Sarasota. He holds a current pro certification by the Professional Tennis Registry (USPTR) and graduated with a B.A. in Communications and Journalism from the Universi

The lesson plans for this past week and this next week are a mix of 3 of these 5 games:
1) Partner "trap and tap" rally. We pair the children and have them practice a rally with their partner.
2) Run, Split, Hit VOLLEY! Kids run to the net, "split-step" and hit several volleys.
3) Tennis hockey! Kids try to hit the ball past the coach to SCORE!
4) Koosh Ball Carry. Everyone balances a ball on their racquet and moves around the tennis area.
5) Double Ball Drop--Kids must run forward and catch a bouncing ball.

THIS WEEK’S COACH OF THE WEEK: MATT CUNNINGHAM! (he is also the founder of TotStart Academy)

1) Where are you from and what’s a fun fact about you?
I am a Florida native, born in Anchorage Alaska (before AK was a state!). My family moved from AK when I was an infant.

2) When and how did you become a tennis coach?
I became a tennis coach after playing highschool and college tennis in Florida. I started coaching tennis when I was in my 20s.

3) What do you enjoy doing on your free time?
I love to hang out with my family. When I'm not doing that, I get away from tennis by playing golf, being on the water and traveling.

4) What is your favorite thing about coaching?
I have worked with all age groups and ability levels, but teaching 3-5 year old kids is the best! They are always enthusiastic. They motivate me and energize me!

Week of February 27th Program:

1--Tiny toss/tennis ladder warm up combines racquet skills with foot skills.
2--Hot Potato is a repeat of last week getting kids to run and hand off the koosh ball to a buddy using their racquet.
3--The Double Ball Drop is a skills game combining a run to the ball catching it on one bounce.
4--The Tennis Ball Sandwich is pure fun as kids pile their racquets up and try to balance them on their way to the net!

Don’t forget to register your kids for tennis before next week for them to be part of the program!

Week of February 20th Program:

1. Tap, Tap, Hit! -- we teach the kids the difference between hitting the ball easy and hard as they rally with the coach.
2. Volley -- we bring children to the net and practice hitting the ball before it bounces--hitting over the net.
3. We play a super fun game of "hot potato" with racquets and koosh balls!
4. Sleeping Giants! We imitate animals using tennis foot skills!
