One of the biggest and most common mistakes that families make at the start of the recruiting process? 👇

Not keeping an open mind.

Players and families often start with a specific list of preferences. But the reality is that your athlete doesn’t get to simply choose where they want to play. The coaching staff has to want them, too, and they have A LOT of athletes to choose from.

That's why the FIRST filter in your college search should be the coach’s interest level.

The process works best when athletes are willing to explore ALL opportunities before deciding which are the best fit. Otherwise, they may miss schools that could offer a great experience simply because they filtered them out too early.

Keep your options open early so you have more choices later.

If your athlete wants to play in college but you're unsure which schools to target or how to generate genuine recruiting interest, comment below or message us and ask to schedule a free recruiting consultation.

Don't start by asking which colleges your athlete would choose…

Most high school athletes dream of playing for a championship college program. 🏆

There’s nothing wrong with that, but here’s a question to consider 👇
What if joining a struggling program provides the BETTER opportunity?

An established program often already has experienced players at every position, talented backups, and limited opportunities for underclassmen to compete. Your athlete might have to wait two or three years before earning a starting role is realistic. 😕

A rebuilding program, on the other hand, might provide an opportunity to compete earlier and the satisfaction of being a big part of MAKING a program successful.

Of course, not every struggling program presents a good opportunity. There’s a difference between a program that’s building with a clear plan and a program that’s struggling because of poor leadership, inadequate resources, or a dysfunctional culture.

The main point is this…

Don’t automatically eliminate a school because of its win-loss record, and don’t assume that joining a winning program automatically means your athlete will have a better experience.

The end goal isn’t simply to be part of a successful program. It’s finding an opportunity where your athlete can contribute, develop, and have a meaningful college experience. 👍

STOP putting so much pressure on that first email. 🔴

The goal is much simpler than you think.
👉 Get on the coach's radar.

Give them enough info to make an initial evaluation. Just the basics. 👌

✔️Name, graduation year, position/event, high school, and location.
✔️ Why your athlete is targeting the school and/or program.
✔️ A few of their strongest metrics and statistics.
✔️ Academic information, including GPA and academic interest areas.
✔️ A link to a recruiting profile and/or videos

❓Then ASK a question to put the ball back in the coach’s court to respond.

Just get the conversation going.

If your athlete wants to play in college but you’re unsure how to introduce them to coaches or what should happen after that first email...that's where we can help. Reach out to get started with a free consultation. 💬

Talent gets you noticed.
Coachability gets you signed. 🏆

Once a college coach knows an athlete has the talent to play at the next level, they immediately ask themselves one question:

👉 “Do I actually want to coach this athlete for the next 4 years?”

When two players have identical stats, coaches aren’t looking at measurable numbers—they’re looking at behavior. 👇
How do they react right after making a mistake?
What does their body language say when receiving feedback?
How do they treat their teammates, refs, and parents?

The best part? Being coachable is 100% within your control.

Help your athlete stand out by teaching them to:
1️⃣ Listen before responding
2️⃣ Take constructive criticism without making excuses
3️⃣ Ask questions when they don’t understand
4️⃣ Handle disappointment like a leader

Talent tells a coach what an athlete can do today. Coachability shows them who they can become. 🌱

How can you tell if a coach is REALLY interested in you? 🤔

Figuring out the true interest level of a college coach is one of the hardest things for families to figure out during the recruiting process.

And you typically won't get a straight answer. 😕 Coaches rarely want to completely close the door on an athlete they might want later, so they say things like…
“Keep us updated.”
“We’ll continue watching.”
“You’re definitely on our radar.”

But those comments don’t necessarily mean your athlete is a recruiting priority...so pay attention to behavior, not words. 👌

Does the coach initiate phone calls?
Does the coach encourage a campus visit?
Does the coach communicate consistently via text and/or phone?
Does the coach ask specific questions about your athlete’s priorities?

Most importantly, is the relationship progressing? You don't need to overanalyze every text message or panic when a coach doesn’t respond immediately, but it’s important to look for patterns over time.

If you’re struggling to determine which coaches are seriously recruiting your athlete and which are simply keeping the door open, DM us to schedule a free recruiting consultation. 👍
