⚾️On August 6, 1979 Thurman Munson's funeral service was held at the Canton Memorial Civic Center in Canton, Ohio four days after his tragic death at the age of 32. The entire New York Yankees team attended. Teammates Lou Piniella and Bobby Murcer, who were also Munson's best friends, gave moving eulogies at the gathering of 700 mourners for the late Yankees captain. Piniella said Munson was "the greatest competitor I've ever seen." “The life of a soul on earth lasts longer than his departure," said Murcer. "He lives on in your life and the life of all others who knew him. He lived, he led and he loved”. Yankees manager Billy Martin was inconsolable, sobbing loudly and visibly devastated, later expressing that he felt he had lost a son. Numerous players, managers, umpires, and even commissioner Bowie Kuhn, were in attendance to pay their respects. About a dozen of the players' wives remained to visit with Munson's wife, Diana, and their three children: Tracy, 9, Kelly, 7, and Mike, 4. The Yankees flew back to New York to play an emotional game against the Baltimore Orioles. Murcer, grieving deeply after delivering the eulogy, drove in all five runs (including the game-winning two-run single in the 9th inning) to win the game 5–4.⚾️
