Friends and family in The Colony - what follows is the essay I submitted to CrossFit HQ as the very first step in becoming an Affiliate:
CrossFit saved me. I first found CrossFit in the summer of 2011. I was in the middle of my own physical transformation and my dear friend (and future coach and mentor) put me through a couple of WODs, then later brought me to a few of her box’s “bring a friend”
sessions. I was immediately hooked and made the commitment to start “for real” at the beginning of 2012. I went all in - did the Open, survived all of the WODs and made friends in the process. Then, in September of 2012, my world fell apart. My 21 year old son Atticus was killed in a motorcycle wreck. My coach, my box mates - some of whom I barely knew - rallied around me then and still do to this day. This is the true spirit of CrossFit - it’s a sense of family and community that we encounter that spills over into our lives outside of the box. Why share this with you? Well - it’s important for me to just let you know how vital CrossFit has been to me over the past several years. It’s given me an extended family. It’s provided me with an outlet for my grief. It’s given me the mental toughness I need to keep moving forward. It’s made me more physically capable than I ever imagined. It’s made me more confident in myself as a human being. It’s fed the passion for fitness that I discovered before I had even heard about CrossFit. What does this have to do with my desire to affiliate? I want to give back to my community the gifts that CrossFit has given me. People in my town who know me and have seen not only my physical transformation, but my ability to thrive in the aftermath of tragedy want the same for themselves. They want to be more capable humans and I want to help them reach their goals. I’m not just talking about adults, either. There’s a whole community of middle and high school youth with whom I have had the privilege of working with either as part of their summer marching band conditioning or Boy Scouts of America personal fitness merit badge requirements. They’ve gotten a taste of the format of CrossFit workouts and have absolutely loved it! I want to show the people who say I inspire them just how much THEY inspire ME - and the best way I know how to do that is to make CrossFit accessible year-round for them - not just for a few sessions over a couple of weeks during the summer. I want them to fulfill their potential as healthy, capable human beings while having fun in the process. My vision for The Colony CrossFit is to have a place where people come in feeling ordinary and leave feeling like the badass that they truly are. I want them to have THEIR community - THEIR CrossFit.
