NWA Archivist-in-Residence 12/22/2021

Schellinger Research just donated again to the Archivist in Residence scholarship that is managed by Northwest Archives.

We donate to this scholarship, and have for the last three years now because it is something that one of our close friends spearheaded, and we knew right away that it was something we wanted to be part of.

Social Science residences and internships are usually unpaid, which makes it very difficult for many to apply. As one of Schellinger Research's main focuses is on making history accessible for all, we believe those working on that history should be as diverse as the history is.

To find out more information about this scholarship or if you or someone you know may be interested in applying, visit this link.

Schellinger Research is proud to be part of this great initiative to support paid archival internships.

This is the second year that Schellinger Research has assisted Rachael Cristine Consulting, and we foresee a future supporting her efforts to diversify internships by pushing for more paid residencies as well as pay transparency.

We support this initiative because Schellinger Research is more than a company, it is an extension of who we are.  We support local organizations, as such Andretta is the member of many not for profits organizations. Our one main purpose is to making history live again. By that we mean that we do what we can to help preserve history for future generations so it isn't lost to the cabinets or banker boxes of history.  It is live, it is in the forefront, and it therefore continues in our minds. This can mean personal family histories all the way to national and international histories.

Let’s talk about books today. Well books and architecture. The Kansas City Library has one of the coolest facades. One that makes my book loving heart leap with joy. As you can see the entire front are gigantic spines of great works of literature. No one will pass this building and not know what it is.

On this day in History.....

On January 11, 1935 Amelia Earhart flew from Wheeler Field on the island of Oahu, Hawaii to Oakland California. This marked the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to California.

This has personal significance to Schellinger Research for a couple of reasons. First Jon was stationed at Wheeler Army Airfield, and both Andretta and Jon have stood on that flight line.  Second, Andretta while working for JPAC had a couple of reports regarding Amelia come in. While both turned out not to be her, the search for her continues.

Lulu Crandall was meticulous about preserving history. She donated over 100 binders to the Wasco County Library that were full of newspaper clippings and other historical documents.

In Jan/Feb 2020, Schellinger Research started a volunteer project to digitize these records in order to increase accessibility and to ensure their longevity. Due to COVID-19 the project was, and still is on hold. However when we are able to get back in there, we will continue this important project.

This image is from the first of many binders dedicated to the boats and ships that travelled the Columbia River.
