If you scroll through outdoor media, youโll see a lot of videos of people hanging off cliffs by their fingertips. It looks thrillingโbut if you struggle with heights, lack a solid community, or feel anxious about step one, those videos don't make you want to go outside. They make you want to stay on the couch.
We donโt believe the outdoors should be an exclusive club for the fearless. We believe the outdoors is a classroom for everyone.
Meet Lee. When heโs out on the rock or on the trail, he isn't trying to show off what he can do. As an AMGA SPI, Wilderness First Responder, and college professor in outdoors education, his entire focus is on what you can do safely.
Every two weeks, he addresses a topic of outdoor adventure: from thermoregulation, wildlife, navigation, gear and more.

My students absolutely crushing it out there on their Intro to Outdoor Climbing trip (first time outdoors for many and first time CAMPING for some). So proud of these adventurers for trying hard, overcoming the dreaded Elvis Leg, shouting each other on and, most importantly, keeping each other safe. Iโm so blessed to be able to share these experiences with wonderful humans and lead trips for and !

What a lovely day for walk! A little chilly from rain the previous day, but the wildflowers were popping and we had great company - even a few new friends to spend the day with. We hope youโll join us on our next Decompression Day!

"Hey, does your son want to see some rattlesnakes?...."
(This series of articles is not designed to endear you to the family of pit vipers, but to educate you on currently understood facts so they can be avoided, or admired from a distance. Education starts with debunking myths and one particular untruth has been persistent.)
...we were loading gear at a trailhead outside Victorville, and the local who had offered us a secure parking spot on his property was now leading us toward a decaying mobile home. He trained dogs to avoid snakes, he said, and had offered to teach us about his snakes.
Inside, the sound of about 20 pop cans opening at once hit us in the dark: Ppffftttssssss.

Our remote client, who's been training with us for 9 months, backpacked with us to the Sequoia Kings Canyon last summer, shared this story with our community.
Tales from the Trail Earlier this year I made impromptu plans for a camping trip in West Texas outside of Ft Davis. I was off trail scrambling around on this big rocky hill on a private cattle ranch looking for my camp...
A juvenile southern pacific rattlesnake I disturbed while hiking outside Westlake Village, CA. Its underformed rattle is visible with only one or two nodes. It was neatly camouflaged under some small plant growth likely waiting for lizards to pass by. I had been scanning for snakes and very nearly stepped on this one.

60% off-trail travel in the High Sierra backcountry. Weโll spend our first night at lakes inside a granite bowl and head off-trail on Day 2. Your next three days will be moving through granite slab and grassy gullies as we weave through lakes, plateaus, and meadows to reach a remote lake far from any trail. This FMF designed route isnโt on the map and weโll have the starry sky to ourselves. Learn to navigate and move through the land in true wilderness travel fashion on this unique backcountry experience.
