We are Saddened to Announce that Channel Islands Scuba will be Closing it’s Thousand Oaks Store

Since 1988 Channel Islands Scuba has been the premier Dive Center for Ventura County. We have had thousands of students take their first breaths from the guidance of our long history of legendary local instructors. We have laughed together, cried together, and blown bubbles together. We couldn’t have done any of it without the support of the amazing scuba family that we have come to know and love. Thank you for your many years of patronage and support.

While this may be the end of this location this will only be a pause for the Channel Islands Scuba brand. We can’t wait to see you out on the islands, or in whatever the future of our brand may be.

A Thank You From Our Owner

In February of 2023 you all welcomed me as the newest owner of Channel Islands Scuba. Taking over a brand with such a long history, and with some legendary instructors having been owners, I felt that I had some pretty big shoes to fill. I can’t say that all of my decisions have been right, or that everything was always working in our favor, but I have always been committed to providing the highest quality training and knowledge to our wonderful scuba family.

It has been an honor and a privilege to have served the amazing community that dive the local islands for which we are named. While this does close my time with Channel Islands Scuba, I look forward to seeing all of you again, hopefully blowing some bubbles out at our very own Channel Islands.

🐚Did You Hear? California Abalone Harvest Ban 🌊

California’s ban on wild abalone harvest through at least 2036 is a critical step in protecting red abalone after decades of overfishing, marine heatwaves, and kelp forest loss.

For scuba divers, this isn’t just a regulation, it’s about allowing populations the time and habitat they need to recover. Respecting no-take rules, reporting poaching, and supporting kelp restoration all play a role in long-term recovery.

Protect what you dive. Advocate for healthy reefs. 🤿

🌊 CA Dive Science Update 🌊
California has entered the active recovery phase for the sunflower sea star (Pycnopodia helianthoides), a keystone urchin predator lost during sea star wasting syndrome. Captive breeding is underway, experimental outplanting has been completed, and small wild survivors have been documented. Long-term reintroduction could significantly reduce urchin barrens and support kelp recovery, including within MPAs near Channel Islands National Park.

If encountered: observe, photograph, report and do not touch.

🌊🌿 Kelp forests are the heartbeat of Southern California’s ocean.
These towering underwater forests provide food, shelter, and safe nursery grounds for countless marine species, from tiny invertebrates to giant sea bass.

When kelp thrives, our entire coastal ecosystem flourishes. 💙
