This 15 year old athlete has been putting in the work over a stretch of two months this summer in Portland, OR - and he’s not done yet!

Zach has put in the hard work & effort and Coach Jon has helped guide the way with athlete-specific programming.

Quick highlights for Zach - he’s improved his squat jump by 18%, countermovement jump RSI by 38%, and bodyweight by 15 pounds. He’s also increased all of his lifts from squat, to bench to clean. (See the full blog for more details - comment to get the link to it).

Here at APEX PWR, we start each athlete with a 1-on-1 Sports Science Assessment. This is over the course of two sessions so we can get a baseline of objective testing using the VALD force plates, speed gates and more, while establishing goals that are relevant to the athlete and encompass the next 6 months (and more).

Athlete speed and strength training isn’t just an offseason thing, summer thing or one month thing - it’s ongoing. We continue to test every three months to see where the athlete is at and then make adjustments to the programming as needed. We also modify training when the athlete is in-season versus in the off-season. This is the best way to keep athletes performing at their best, maintaining progress and minimizing injury risk.

Our gym does not empty out when school starts, and there is a specific reason. The athletes who put in the summer are still here in the fall, in season or not.

Speed and strength are qualities you maintain or lose. Practice spends them. It does not build them back. An athlete who trains all summer and then stops when games begin is slowly giving back exactly what they built.

A number you have measured is a problem you can solve. A number you assumed is just a story you told yourself. We put that on display this month, on purpose.

We published a jump test from the middle of a professional athlete's ACL comeback, force plates and all, with a real remaining deficit still in the data. We left it in deliberately. As our physical therapist Dr. Jordan Prunty, DPT, says: objective testing tells the real story, and data should drive rehab decisions, not timelines.

Something good has been happening in women's fitness and it deserves to be said out loud. The goal used to be smaller: eat less, do more cardio, shrink. Strength training got framed as something that would make you bulky, which was wrong, and very effective at keeping women away from the most useful tool in the gym.

That has changed. Women are chasing strong now, and the research is firmly on their side. In the LIFTMOR trial, postmenopausal women with low bone density who lifted heavy twice a week for 8 months raised their spine bone density by 2.9%. A control group doing walking and light weights lost 1.2% (Watson et al., JBMR, 2018).

Welcome to Dad Duty, a new section for the dads in our community. First up: our Director of Performance, Colin Feldtman, CSCS, is chasing a 315 pound bench press. Three plates a side. He is also mid-30s with two kids at home and a full coaching schedule, so his week looks a lot like yours.

Here is the part most dads need to hear. In a large review, 30 to 60 minutes of strength training per week was associated with a 15% lower risk of death from any cause and a 17% lower risk of cardiovascular disease (Momma et al., BJSM, 2022). Per week, not per day.
