Wednesdays are Wonderful at Wildwood.

Surround yourself with nature and music. Toledo Opera will present the inaugural spring performances of Opera ‘Round Town – formerly known as Opera Outdoors at Wildwood Preserve Metropark. Join us on the front lawn of the Manor House as the 2026-2027 Toledo Opera resident artists perform iconic vocal selections from the classical repertoire, along with musical theatre and other American standards. In the event of inclement weather, the performance will be moved indoors to the Manor House. Bring your lawn chair or picnic blanket, sit back and enjoy the music.

Next dates: Wednesday, September 16 and Wednesday,, September 23. Both begin at 6pm.

It’s a privilege to witness the day’s awakening in Howard Marsh, typically quiet as the rising sun sneaks above the horizon. A single goose breaks the silence with a call to action. A loud slow honking and shake of the head signals to the flock that it’s time to take-off. The slow honks become louder and more rapid as others chip in. The “conversation” leads to a flurry of seemingly confused action that quickly becomes organized. The honking syncs with wingbeats and a raucous take-off. A tight V-formation often forms up as the flock moves into the distance, their voices fading as they head for the horizon. The volume settles back to a new quiet. The alarm clock has sounded and the rising sun has others on the move. It’s a beautiful thing.

Celebrate a decade of transformation with a guided nature and history walk through this downtown Maumee River park. Learn how the site evolved from an area once holding an estimated 8,000 tons of debris into the Metropark visitors know today.

Monday, September 14 at 12 to 1 p.m. at Rotary Pavilion at Middlegrounds Metropark

All ages are welcome.

$5 per person. Reservations required at metroparkstoledo.com/events

Programs run rain or shine, so dress for the weather and bring a reusable water bottle. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.

Take your tree climbing skills to the next level at Oak Openings Preserve.

Tree Climbing 201 gives experienced participants a behind-the-scenes look at Metroparks climbing systems while building advanced skills like foot locking and self-belay. Climbers will take on the maple tree at Cannaley Treehouse Village, home to the tallest anchors of any Metroparks climbing tree.

Sunday, September 13,3:30 to 6 p.m. at Cannaley Treehouse Village at Oak Openings Preserve (Ages 8+)
$50 per person, Reservations required at metroparkstoledo.com/events

Participants should have completed at least one Try It! Tree Climbing program before registering.

Weaving a Tangle of Webs

If you have been to Oak Openings Preserve recently, you may have noticed conglomerations of webbing wrapped around portions of tree branches.
Behind these tangled, unsculpted masses of silk lurk the insects behind the webbed blobs.

Fall webworms are the culprits--not tent caterpillars. These species are typically found later in the summer and aren’t too picky when it comes to which trees they prefer. They can be found in many different tree and shrub species, but tend to favor black walnuts, hickories, elms and fruit trees.
