SHOULD PARENTS REPORT BULLYING TO THE SCHOOL IN WRITING?
Should parents report bullying to the school in writing?
Yes—especially when the behavior is repeated, threatening, or affecting your child’s safety or education. A hallway conversation can be forgotten; a written report creates a record.
Send the report to the principal and follow the district’s process. Clearly state that you are reporting alleged harassment, intimidation, or bullying and include the facts you have documented.
Ask the school to confirm receipt, identify the Anti-Bullying Specialist, explain the next steps, and describe the immediate safety plan for your child while the matter is reviewed.
Keep a copy of everything you submit and every response you receive. Follow up calmly and in writing after phone calls or meetings so there is a shared record of what was discussed.

Martial arts is a lifelong journey of learning.
Pictured are Grandmaster Art Beins, head of the United States Black Cat Kenpo Karate Federation, and Master Cliff Hussey.
Grandmaster Beins has served as an instructor and mentor to our family, and Evolution Martial Arts is grateful for every opportunity to learn from his lifetime of martial arts knowledge, leadership, and experience.
We proudly carry those lessons forward while helping students in Toms River develop confidence, discipline, character, and strong martial arts skills.

WHAT SHOULD PARENTS DOCUMENT WHEN REPORTING SCHOOL BULLYING?
What should parents document when reporting school bullying?
Start a factual incident log from day one. For each incident, record the date, time, location, exact words or actions, witnesses, staff members notified, and the response you received.
Save screenshots, messages, photographs, damaged-property records, attendance changes, nurse visits, and relevant emails. Also note how the behavior is affecting your child’s safety, sleep, health, friendships, attendance, or schoolwork.
Keep the record factual. Avoid guesses about another child’s motives. A clear timeline makes it easier for the school to investigate and harder for important details to become lost.
Do not post identifying information about children online. Preserve the evidence and use the proper reporting process.

HOW CAN CONFIDENCE HELP A CHILD HANDLE BULLYING?
How can confidence help a child handle bullying?
Confidence cannot guarantee that a child will never be targeted. It can give them better tools to recognize trouble, set a boundary, move toward safety, and ask for help.
Calm posture, an assertive voice, awareness of surroundings, emotional control, and the willingness to report a problem can make a difficult situation easier to handle.
This is not about blaming a child for being bullied. The responsibility always belongs to the person choosing the harmful behavior.
Real confidence is not pretending to feel no fear. It is knowing what to do, even while feeling afraid.

How much martial arts history can fit into one photograph? Apparently, quite a bit!
From left to right:
🥋 My father, Master Cliff Hussey
🥋 Grandmaster Raymond Gay, founder of United States Black Cat Kenpo
🥋 Grandmaster Eugene Percival, one of Grandmaster Gay’s teachers and a true martial arts pioneer
🥋 And yours truly on the right—apparently the only one who didn’t get the memo that we were supposed to smile!
This photograph represents generations of martial arts knowledge, leadership, friendship, and history. I am proud to have learned from those who came before me and even prouder to continue passing those lessons on to the next generation at Evolution Martial Arts.
Some photographs become more valuable with time. This is definitely one of them.

WHAT SHOULD A CHILD DO WHEN SOMEONE IS BULLYING THEM?
What should a child do when someone is bullying them?
Teach three simple steps they can remember under pressure: VOICE, MOVE, and TELL.
VOICE: If it feels safe, use a calm, clear statement such as “Stop,” “Do not touch me,” or “Do not talk to me like that.”
MOVE: Walk toward friends, school staff, or another supervised area. The goal is safety—not winning an argument.
TELL: Report exactly what happened to a trusted adult. If the first adult does not help, tell another adult and keep telling until someone responds.
If speaking up would make the situation less safe, skip the verbal response and move directly to safety and help.
Practice the plan at home before it is needed. Under stress, children are more likely to use words and actions they have already rehearsed.
