Groody Bros. Bicycle Restoration

If you have followed us for any length of time at all you have seen some of the projects we have done for Don of Middleton, RI. He has a passion for finding obscure vintage bikes and bringing them back to life. This time he sent us a very sun-faded Automoto Champion. His greatest desire was to see if we could recreate the double box lining on the frame and fork. We couldn’t do it freehand like the craftsmen of old, but we could make it out of white cut vinyl. He chose Illusion Berry for the color, and supplied us with a set of decals. During the prep inspection we found a dent in the down tube that would need to be filled in with brass brazing prior to powder coating. Along with the application of the decals and vinyl box lining we also did extensive lug lining in white enamel. His response upon receiving the frame back was quite gratifying. “(The frame) arrived safe and sound today! it's not just incredible... it's exquisite! you are the Jedi master of bike restoration! Thank you sooo much for your efforts with this frame! Don”.

Ethan, of neighboring Lawrence, KS, brought us his classic Specialized Rock Hopper for some significant modifications. His goal was to convert the frame into a much cleaner looking 1X. He had purchased a Surly fork that had a disc brake tab and wanted to add the same to the frame. We removed the cantilever brake bosses from the seat stays, cable housing stops for the front derailleur, and rear brake. In turn, we added the brake mount, supporting truss, and brake housing guides along the down tube and chain stay for the new disc brake mount. He chose Illusion Gambler for the new color and provided metallic gold tone decals. Lastly, a gloss clear urethane top coat was sprayed on the frame and fork. He graced us with a photo of the finished build. He’s created a really eye-catching main whip!

Andrew, of Hopkins, MN, is a repeat customer. He wanted to do a 650B conversion on his classic Gitane Tour de France frame. Along with this he requested a pair of housing stops for the rear brake be added to the top tube. While making the modifications we also filled in a dent in the head tube with brass brazing. He chose Misty Cranberry for the new color. Vive la France!

Andrew, of Portland, OR, sent us his Davidson Travel frame for refinishing. Along with the normal chips and scratches that a travel frame accumulates, he had a fender mount added to the chain stays. As the frame had some superficial corrosion happening under the original paint, we added a rust inhibitor High Zinc Primer before powder coating the final color. He supplied us with a set of decals, and chose Sea Foam Pearl for the color. We copied the metallic gold pantograph fills of the original paint scheme, done with a hypodermic syringe. When he saw what we had done he asked us to do the lug lining in metallic gold as well.

Oscar, of West Lafayette, IN, sent us his Gunnar Rockhound for refinishing. He chose Illusion Purple for the new color, and supplied us with a set of decals to be applied. A gloss clear urethane top coat was applied for added durability and shine. We love that he sent us photos of the finished build. Superbly designed and executed.
