Our dear friend, Lisa, owns the local confectionary Bootleg Bourbon Balls, which are all made with local distilled spirits. With six FIFA World Cup tournaments being played in Kansas City she wanted a classy looking bicycle in front of her shop to catch the eye of the visiting European spectators. We happened to have a unique German-made mixte in storage that was perfectly suited for the task. Her only requirement was that it be done in orange and have a basket for flowers. We present, Rosie the Rum Runner!
The bike was an EGZ Zweirad (zweirad translates to “two-wheeler”) with a very elegant frame design. Originally, the bike was a 6-speed with hand brakes. We felt that a simplified, uncluttered look would be best given the application. The wheels were disassembled, front hub, rims and spokes were cleaned and polished. A German-made “Komet Super” coaster brake rear hub was found in one of our numerous parts bins and laced to the original rear rim. The original saddle, tool pouch, and grips were all salvaged, along with the rear rack and rear wheel lock.
After stripping off the paint, the frame was refinished in Just Orange and RAL 9001 Ivory. Lug lining and pinstripe accents were added in metallic gold. We created a head badge decal from a stylized version of the business logo, along with the Rum Runner (one of the flavors of bourbon balls sold at the shop) moniker on the chain guard. We also just happened to have an appropriate looking cane basket in our stash. This was attached to the handlebars and fitted with a custom-made decaleur to keep the basket horizontal.
If you want some really delicious treats for your FIFA watch party, or any special occasion, we highly recommend Bootleg Bourbon Balls. And, yes, she does ship her product to wherever you might be celebrating.

In Kit’s words, “The paint job looked like something you would buy at Walmart”. She lives in KCMO and was planning a trip to see the goings on at the Sea Otter Classic. Her hope was to have the bike refinished in time to take with her. We made special arrangements to pick up and drop off the frame. She chose a color from out remnant inventory, Bellflower Blue. The carbon fiber fork was wet painted to match. While chemically stripping the frame we did encounter a dent that had occurred during manufacturing and had been filled with body putty at the factory.

Alex, of Alexandria, VA, sent us his Specialized Allez Comp frame to be refinished. It had some visible corrosion issues that he wanted remedied. Stripping the frame showed the full extent of the problem areas. We did an Iron Phosphate treatment followed by a Zinc Rich Primer as rust inhibitors against future corrosion. The pitted areas were then targeted with multiple passes of Out Gassing/Filling Primer, sanding between coats until a smooth surface was achieved. The final coat was done in Super Durable Wet Black.

Ryan, of Lenexa, KS, was referred to us by Hanover Bikes of Overland Park, KS. They were giving his Specialized Allez a complete overhaul when Ryan expressed an interest in restoring the appearance of the frame. While dropping off the frame, he selected the color closest to the original but with a hint of pearlescence, Night Blue Pearl. It was the same hue, just a shade darker. He had decals custom output to match the originals which we used to select the accent color for the pantograph fills, RAL 2011 Deep Orange. Once completed a gloss urethane topcoat was applied. Looking pretty sharp!

Tim is a repeat customer, local to the Kansas City area. This time he brought us his All City Super Professional along with an additional Crust fork. He purchased a rather trippy color shifting powder called Prismatic Cosmos. Photos really don’t do this color justice but the video comes pretty close.
