Flashy footwork doesn’t create great athletes
it reveals the qualities they’ve already built.
Too many athletes chase the drills they see on social media because they look fast, explosive, or impressive. But copying the movement isn’t the same as developing the ability behind it.
Elite athletes can afford to spend time on low-value drills because they’ve already built an incredible foundation of strength, power, speed, and coordination. If you’re a young athlete trying to earn a roster spot or separate yourself from the competition, you can’t afford to waste training sessions.
Sport-specific drills absolutely have their place, but they should complement, not replace the work that actually makes you more explosive. The biggest difference-makers are your ability to produce force, produce it quickly, and coordinate your body to express that force.
Don’t just train to look fast. Train to be fast. Build the engine first, and the flashy movements will take care of themselves.

FALLING STARTS
One more easy to teach and execute drill that gets athletes in an ideal horizontal position to create a more explosive acceleration phase.
Think about “frezing” and “falling” to avoid bending at the hips before falling forward.
Save this one to use it later.
I know I say things like this a lot…
But the payout is too big and the risk to avoid it is too great to not do it.
"Embarrassment is an under-explored emotion. Go out there and make a fool of yourself. Feel the cringe. Everything you want is on the other side of that." - Austin Butler.
EXTENSIVE PLYOMETRICS
In this case weighted pogos,
making an emphasis on tendon elasticity and stiffness.

The magic of speed is in the simple drills that are done consistently and executed immaculate.
Which one can you do best?
DON’T GET ME WRONG
Character alone won’t get you a spot if you can’t hit a beach ball or if your best day on the mound is 79 mph, but you get the point.
I’ve seen big prospects, future superstars, throw away opportunity after opportunity because everywhere they went they found someone to disagree with and something to complain about.
You should want to play the sport because you love it, but at some point you must also understand that it’s business. And like in any business the boss wants the good people, the disciplined ones, the accountable ones, the reliable ones.
Being good at the job will open the doors,
Having a strong character will keep you in.
IT’S A CHOICE THAT YOU MAKE
Becoming elite is not a coincidence, don’t mistake wishes and thoughts with intentionality and action.
SKATERS STARTS
I believe in teaching Speed
Drills like this make it easier because athletes are able to get in specific advantageous positions without needing to be over cued.
Just jump completely laterally and redirect explosively at contact with the ground.
Alternate sides for 2-3 reps each side.
Here’s how it works
You can run away and avoid the things that make you uncomfortable and challenge you your entire life or…
You can make a conscious decision to face them, overcome them, and reap the rewards on the other side.
IT’S A CHOICE, it’s not luck, and it’s not talent.
JUMP BACK STARTS
I love this simple easy way to teach acceleration mechanics and posture without even cueing athletes too much and confusing them.
Just leave your chest over the front cone and let the body solve the task at hand by getting into the correct position without forcing any mechanical changes.
