A Santa Ana does not feel like a hard training day, which is the problem. The air is warm and clear, the marine layer is gone, and your shirt stays dry the whole session because the sweat evaporates the moment it arrives. The fluid still left you, you just never saw it go.

The same dry wind takes the moisture out of your palms, so the chalk has nothing to absorb and the knurling has a film of blown dust on it, and your grip quits around rep six on a set your back could have finished.

The thing worth reading in October is the air quality number rather than the temperature, because a hard carry moves several times more air through you than sitting in the car did. Wipe the handles, chalk lighter, weigh in and weigh out, take the full three minutes.

New on the blog: what offshore winds actually change about an outdoor session, and what we move indoors when they arrive.

Offshore winds flip the marine layer. What single-digit humidity does to hydration and grip, why air quality beats heat, and how to adjust an October session.

Nobody writes "I rested less" in their training log. They write "plateau", and then they go and change a program that was working fine.

The fuel that powers a heavy set of five needs oxygen and several minutes to come back. Your breathing settles in about ninety seconds because carbon dioxide clears fast, so "I've got my breath back" starts you early every single time, and it feels responsible while it does it. Then you go 8, then 6, then 5, then 4, and you log four sets when what you actually did was one good one and three worse copies of it.

The three minute rest study found more strength and more size than one minute in trained lifters. One trial, one population, so not gospel, but it points the same way the physiology does.

Two week test in the new post: same lift, same load, week one rest how you normally rest, week two put three minutes on a timer, then add up total reps. Your body will tell you which side it is on.

Ninety seconds gets your breath back and not much else. What is actually recovering between sets, why heavy compounds need longer, and a two-week test.

If your midsection gives out before your quadriceps do, the set trained your midsection to failure and your quadriceps to somewhere short of it.

That is the real argument about machines and free weights. Not which is superior, but what each one removes and whether you wanted it removed.

Where plate-loaded equipment genuinely wins, where it does not, and how to use both in the same week.

On the assisted pull-up machine, a heavier setting means MORE help, not less. The stack is a counterweight.

So the number you want going down over time, not up. A person still at 120 lb of assistance four months later has not got stronger at pull-ups. They have got very good at doing pull-ups with 120 lb of help.

How to pick your setting in ninety seconds, how to progress off it, and the point at which the machine starts holding you back.

The counterweight runs backwards, and most people never progress off it. How to pick a setting, how to reduce it, and when to leave the machine behind.
