Some Days Are Just Better on Horseback

There are a lot of reasons we love what we do at Cades Cove Riding Stables, but pictures like these pretty much say it all.

Our horses aren't simply part of the job. They're the heart of what happens here every day.

Our crew spends countless hours with them — feeding them, caring for them, getting them ready for rides, learning their personalities, and making sure they're ready to safely carry guests down the trail. When you spend that much time together, it's pretty hard not to become attached.

And then we get to watch our guests experience it too.

There's just something about sitting in the saddle on a beautiful day in the Smokies. The trees overhead, the mountains around you, a good horse underneath you, and nowhere you need to be except right there in that moment.

Sometimes you don't even realize how much you needed a day like that until you're having one.

That's what we hope people take home from Cades Cove Riding Stables. Not just another activity they checked off their vacation list, but a memory.

Maybe it's your first horseback ride.

Maybe you've loved horses your entire life.

The Best Part Is the Memories You Take Home

There’s something special about watching a group disappear down the trail at Cades Cove Riding Stables.

One minute everyone is getting settled into the saddle, meeting their horse, and wondering what the ride will be like. The next, they’re heading beneath the trees and into the beautiful Great Smoky Mountains.

And when the ride is over, sometimes you just have to stop for one more visit with your horse before saying goodbye.

That might be one of our favorite parts of what we do.

A horseback ride may only be one part of your trip to Cades Cove, but the memories can stick with you long after your vacation is over. You remember the horse you rode, the sound of the trail, the forest around you, the conversations along the way, and maybe even that last little goodbye before heading home.

For us, these aren't just horses carrying people down a trail. Each one has a personality, and it's amazing how quickly guests can form a connection with the horse carrying them through the Smokies.

The Ride Starts Here

There’s always a moment when the anticipation ends and the adventure finally begins.

You’ve checked in, met the crew, waited for your turn, and then you hear that it’s time to meet your horse.

For some of our guests, horseback riding is something they’ve done for years. For others, this is their very first time climbing into a saddle. Either way, our crew is there to help get everyone matched with their horse, mounted, comfortable, and ready before heading out.

Then comes the best part.

Leaving the stable behind and riding into the beautiful forests of Cades Cove.

The sound of the stable slowly disappears, the trail stretches out ahead, and for a little while you're experiencing the Smokies at the pace of a horse.

These are the moments we get to see every day at Cades Cove Riding Stables — families making memories, first-time riders discovering something new, returning guests coming back for another adventure, and people getting a chance to see one of America's most beautiful places from horseback.

Behind Every Ride at Cades Cove

When you arrive at Cades Cove Riding Stables, you see the horses saddled and ready, the guides preparing to head out, and groups getting excited for their ride.

But there is a whole lot more happening behind the scenes.

There are trails and grounds to maintain, horses to care for, equipment to check, guests to help, helmets to fit, questions to answer, and countless little jobs that have to be done every day before another group can head out.

Some of those jobs aren't very glamorous. You might find someone clearing leaves, working around the barn, helping a nervous first-time rider, getting the next group organized, or simply making sure everything is where it needs to be.

That's part of life at a working riding stable.

And when everything is ready, another group gets to climb into the saddle and experience Cades Cove in a way that's hard to duplicate anywhere else — on horseback, surrounded by the forests and mountains of the Great Smoky Mountains.

We love the beautiful trail pictures, but sometimes it's the ordinary moments around the stable that tell the bigger story.

To everyone who has worked behind the scenes, cared for the horses, helped our guests, maintained the grounds, and kept things moving day after day: you're a big part of what makes Cades Cove Riding Stables what it is.

The horseback ride might be what you came for, but the experience starts before you ever head down the trail.

At Cades Cove Riding Stables, every ride begins with getting everyone ready, matching riders with their horses, making adjustments, answering questions, and helping our guests feel comfortable before the group heads out.

For some guests, it's their first time on a horse. For others, horseback riding is something they've loved for years. Either way, there's always a little anticipation while everyone waits on the loading platform and gets ready for the adventure ahead.

Then it's time to leave the stable behind and head into the beautiful surroundings of Cades Cove.

And sometimes the Smokies put on a show before you even arrive.

Those fog-covered mountains are one of our favorite sights. There's just something about watching the morning mist settle between the ridges that reminds you why they're called the Great Smoky Mountains.

Whether you're visiting for the first time or Cades Cove has been part of your family's vacations for years, seeing this area from horseback gives you a completely different way to experience it.

We love meeting the families, couples, friends, and longtime visitors who stop by the stables and become a small part of our story.
