We usually assume gentle parenting isn’t working because our kid’s behavior isn’t changing fast enough

But if you feel constantly exhausted and stuck, it’s often because you’re still relying on the reactive scripts you heard growing up

You can’t shift their behavior until you update your own reaction and response

Try swapping your default reactions for these regulating scripts:

📍 Instead of lecturing and blaming in the moment, try:

“It makes sense you made a mistake. Let’s figure out what we can do about it together.”

📍 Instead of saying “Stop crying” or “Because I said so”, try:

“I see you’re very upset. It would we so much fun to continue playing/watching TV/getting that toy. I’m here with you. You can be upset.”

📍 Instead of comparisons, like “See! Jimmy listened on the first try”, try:

“Last time you had a hard time listening to me, let’s see if this time I can help you and it’ll be different.”

📍 Instead of threats, “I’m leaving you here since you’re not listening/throwing a fit”, try:

“I need you to stay close to me so we stay safe. If you can’t do that right now, I will have to help you to go and we can try this again another time.”

These keep your boundaries clear, feel respectful and introduce problem solving

These responses always stay away from shame, blame and fear of abandonment

Which of these scripts would be easiest to try today?

Save this to keep some scripts at hand 💾

You can literally rewire your brain and nervous system response by having a few safe scripts prepped for when things go sideways

📍 Mistake happened? Skip the lecture for once, I promise you they are learning a lesson! Instead, help they learn to problem solve by working WITH them to fix the mistake

📍 Meltdown happened while at the store? Don’t threaten or shame. That only escalates the big feelings. Remove them from the environment and help them regulate when it’s just the two of you, so that they can borrow your calm

📍 Getting dysregulated yourself and using sarcasm? That’s just passive aggressive that doesn’t yield good results. Learn to catch yourself before you flip the lid on your nervous system and use proven strategies to calm yourself. Model this for your kids and they’ll learn to self regulate from you

“Is the anxiety I’m feeling right now about THEIR experience, or is it about MINE?”

😩 It is so hard to watch our kids step into spaces we don’t have control over

But if we carry high anxiety inside ourselves about their school day, they will pick up on it and carry it too!

They will think, “If mom is worried about this place, it must be dangerous.”

So, take a deep breath 😮‍💨

Separate your story from theirs

💪 They are resilient, and they have you as their safe place to bounce back to at the end of the day

Be their harbor at any time, so that they feel safe even during hard moments 🫶

📨 Save this for a time when you need a gentle reminder to release control and take a breath

We set five alarms in the morning, rush around packing lunches, prepping water bottles and checking if bags are packed . . .
. . and then we wonder why our kids dig their heels in when it comes to putting their shoes on or getting out of the door on time

✨ Urgency triggers threat ✨

Which mean that when we rush our kids with anxiety in our voice (and in our body), their brain doesn’t speed up, it freezes or fights back

💡 Try anchoring your morning in connection first this week

A quick moment of calm eye contact, a hug, or a quick check in into their world before you start directing their steps changes how their brain receives your requests, it leads to cooperation

⁉️ What’s the hardest part of your morning routine right now? Let’s talk about it in the comments below 👇
