🐴 DON’T BE AFRAID OF AN OLDER HORSE

We hear it all the time:

“I love this horse, but he’s 15.”
“She’s 18. I’m afraid she’s too old.”
“I want something younger because I want to have years to ride.”

But there is something we wish more horse buyers understood:

❤️ HORSES CAN STILL BE RIDDEN WELL INTO THEIR 20s, AND SOME EVEN INTO THEIR 30s.

Turning 15, 18, or 20 does not automatically mean a horse is ready to stand in a pasture and retire.

A healthy, sound horse that has been well cared for can continue enjoying an active life for many years. There are horses in their 20s still trail riding, giving lessons, competing, and carrying their owners on wonderful rides.

And yes, there are even horses that remain rideable and active into their 30s, although every horse is an individual and their workload should always match their health and physical condition.

WHAT ABOUT A 12- OR 13-YEAR-OLD HORSE?

We sometimes see buyers call a 12- or 13-year-old horse “old.”

We don't see it that way at all.

For many riding horses, 12 or 13 can be right in their prime.

They have maturity.
They have experience.
They've had time to learn their job.
And they may potentially have many riding years still ahead of them.

If that horse remains healthy and sound into his 20s, think about how much time that could actually mean together.

🐴 AGE CAN BE ONE OF THE THINGS THAT MAKES A HORSE VALUABLE

When you're looking for a safe family horse, trail horse, beginner horse, or confidence builder, experience matters.

Those years may represent thousands of hours of learning.

An experienced horse may have already encountered traffic, dogs, tractors, creeks, bridges, wildlife, bicycles, blowing bags and that mailbox that apparently looked extremely suspicious the first 300 times he passed it. 😂

He's had time to learn.

He's had time to mature.

And sometimes he's had time to learn one of the most valuable lessons a horse can learn:

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF HIS RIDER. ❤️

A younger horse cannot magically be given ten additional years of life experience.

“BUT I’M AFRAID AN OLDER HORSE WON’T LIVE VERY LONG.”

Horses can live well into their 20s, and some live into their 30s and beyond.

The most famous example is Old Billy, widely recognized as the oldest recorded horse. He reportedly lived to an extraordinary 62 years old.

Obviously, 62 is exceptional, and nobody should expect every horse to live that long.

But it certainly helps put a 12-, 15-, or even 20-year-old horse into perspective.

❤️ AND HERE'S THE REALLY IMPORTANT PART:

You don't necessarily have to stop riding a horse just because he turns 20.

If your veterinarian feels the horse is healthy and sound for the work, an older horse may continue being ridden.

Maybe his workload changes as he ages. Maybe the rides become easier or shorter. Maybe he doesn't work as hard as he once did.

But 20 does not automatically equal retired.

And even 30 does not automatically mean a horse can't be ridden. Some horses remain healthy and active at that age, although riding a horse in his 30s should depend entirely on that individual horse's condition and veterinary guidance.

LOOK AT THE HORSE STANDING IN FRONT OF YOU

Don't buy or reject a horse based on one number.

Look at his health.

Look at his soundness.

Look at his training.

Look at his experience.

Look at how he treats his rider.

And if you're concerned, have a veterinarian perform a pre-purchase examination.

A 6-year-old isn't guaranteed to give you 20 years.

And an 18-year-old isn't guaranteed to give you only two.

There are no guarantees with horses of any age.

So don't walk away from the horse that makes you feel safe, puts a smile on your face, and takes care of you simply because someone told you 15, 18, or 20 is “too old.”

❤️ A 12- OR 13-YEAR-OLD MAY BE IN HIS PRIME.
🐴 A HORSE IN HIS 20s MAY STILL HAVE PLENTY OF RIDING LEFT.
❤️ AND SOME HORSES REMAIN ACTIVE EVEN INTO THEIR 30s.

Don't just count the years a horse has lived.

Look at what those years have taught him, and think about the years you may still have ahead together.

🐴 WHAT MAKES A HORSE THE “RIGHT” HORSE?

It isn't always the prettiest color, the fanciest pedigree, or the horse that catches your eye first.

Sometimes it's the horse that makes you relax when you get in the saddle.

The one that stands quietly while you get yourself situated.

The one that doesn't get upset when you make a mistake.

The one that lets you enjoy the trail instead of worrying about what might happen next.

❤️ The right horse should fit the RIDER.

That's why at A Ranch Horse, we try to be honest about each horse's riding level and personality. A wonderful horse for one rider may not be the right horse for another.

Our goal isn't simply to sell you a horse.

It's to help you find the horse you'll be happy you brought home. 🐴❤️

🐴 WHAT DOES “KID SAFE” REALLY MEAN TO US?

We use the words Kid Safe very carefully at A Ranch Horse.

To us, a kid-safe horse isn't simply a horse that a child has ridden.

❤️ We look for a horse that is:
• Quiet and sensible
• Forgiving when a young rider makes a mistake
• More willing to slow down than rush forward
• Comfortable with activity going on around them
• Easy to handle on the ground
• Dependable outside the arena
• Able to help build a young rider's confidence

Kids don't always give perfect cues. They may move their legs when they didn't mean to, pull a rein accidentally, lose their balance, or get nervous.

A truly kid-safe horse needs to be forgiving of those little mistakes.

That's why you'll sometimes see a young rider on our horses. We want to see how a horse responds to a child, not just how well that horse rides for an experienced adult.

Not every gentle horse is a kid-safe horse, and that's okay. Our goal is to describe each horse honestly and help match the right horse with the right rider.

🕊️ **BENNY – A SECOND CHANCE STILL IN PROGRESS** 🕊️

Benny didn’t arrive with a clean slate… he arrived with the weight of everything that had been ignored for too long.

When he first came to us through a sheriff-assisted neglect case, he was thin, worn down, and carrying the physical toll of long-term neglect. Overgrown feet, poor body condition, and a dullness that told a story without needing words.

Since then, Benny has been slowly, patiently rebuilt—not all at once, not with shortcuts, but one careful step at a time. Vet care, dental work, farrier attention, steady nutrition… all the quiet, unglamorous pieces that matter most.

And little by little, he started to come back.

He’s gained weight. His coat has improved. His feet are better with consistent care. Most importantly, the light behind his eyes has started to return—the part that says he feels safe enough to just be a horse again.

But Benny’s story is still unfinished.

He is not being offered as a riding horse right now. He is still gaining strength and rebuilding his body the right way, without being rushed or pushed beyond where he is today. What he is, right now, is something softer and harder all at once: a survivor in progress.

💔 Kind gelding who has known too much neglect
💔 Currently rebuilding body condition and strength
💔 Gentle, easy to handle, and quietly trying his best

He stands about 14.1hh and is estimated to be 18–19 years old. Every day with him is a reminder that not every recovery is fast… but some are worth every slow step.

🌿 **Benny isn’t looking for perfection. He’s looking for someone patient enough to let healing finish its story.**
