Certainly Uncertain

The itch to go skiing is getting stronger each day. Colder temperatures and winds have made bike riding and camping trips less attractive. The good news is that I have had more time to do all of the yardwork and tree trimming prep around my place before the snow settles in. We've done four runs to the dump with green waste in the last couple of weeks....

Just A Bit Of Frosting

We finally had a hint of snow showing at Alpine Meadows this morning. It just took a while for the fog to clear so we could see that new snow. The snow level seemed to sit right about 7500 feet as the last of this storm moved through. Looking at the various webcams around the other valley, it looks like the upper parts of the mountain generally saw about 2 inches of snow....

An Active Weather Pattern…

The weather is changing. Right now it's cloudy and in the mid 30's at home, with a chance of some rain today. It's not a great day for mountain biking, nor finishing up the last bits of garden cleanup and winter prep. It's hard to believe that just 5 days ago we were camped on the beach in Santa Cruz and it was 90°....

The Beauty Of Independent Ski Areas

There was a time where all ski areas were owned by people that actually loved to ski. They took pride in getting their mountain open as soon as conditions allowed, and staying open as long as it was still possible to slide down the mountain. For the most part those days are gone. Mountains operate on a schedule that exists to extract profits for shareholders or private equity firms....

Searching For Tahoe Snow

The weather influencers shifted into high gear last week. There was a chance of a hurricane making landfall in Southern California and snowfall in the Lake Tahoe region, all within the same week. The worst of these wannabe forecasters were predicting that Mammoth Mountain could get feet of snow if everything lined up right. What they did not mention was that the odds of everything lining up right were about one in a million....

What’s New At Alpine Meadows?

It's been the longest summer ever at Alpine Meadows, after an early closing last spring. The minimal snowpack around the mountain meant that summer crews had more time to move about the mountain and get work done. Truth be told, most visitors will not even notice the changes. I hopped on my mountain bike last week and took a ride up the mountain for a little "look see"....

That First Sierra Snow…

The first snow of the '26-'27 has fallen. Immediately my body can't think about much other than skiing. Calm down Mark. No snow fell in the Tahoe region, it was all in the southern Sierra above 9,000 feet. The snow that fell yesterday will not be a start of the base for a new ski season. More likely, it will probably all be gone by today as temperatures warm again....

Updates: El Niño, Another Loss And A Small Win

As skiers and riders that love big snow years, we have been trained by the media to worship "El Niño" like it was the greatest thing to ever happen. Over the last couple of months, I have been a bit cautious in trying not to create a whole lot of hype. But the levels of excitement being created by mainstream media sources is really kicking the level of hype upwards....
