First dental at 2 years old! And then a check up every 6 months until they are 5. After that, annual dentals!
I have a passion for equine dentistry and have been floating horses for 6 years! I've seen the good, bad, and the ugly. I've taken horses from skeletons that were being properly fed to needing a diet just by properly floating and balancing their mouth! I've seen horses going from dangerous to be around and ride to little puppy dog personalities.
I'd say 95% of the time your horse isn't being bad just because. It's because they are in pain and they have no other way to tell you.
