Use of cones during training sessions is receiving a lot of negativity. The phrase “bones over cones” has gained in popularity. Meaning players should only train with live defenders or in game situational settings and then they will just figure it out, organize, and develop their skills on their own. But what about the players who aren’t able to figure it out on their own? I guess they just get left behind? The cones aren’t what’s holding players back from transferring skills to games. Its the missing details, techniques, and lack of real skills that are aren’t being taught or trained that is issue. In this session with .petersmarck we identified a dribble timing issue which, once corrected, helped with syncing up his ball handling with his feet. This allowed him to find the order or rhythm of the game which will now allow him to transfer these skills to games. He still needs to work on this in live situations with real defenders but this cone drill helped us correct an issue that could prevent him from being successful in live game situations.
