Game Recap: May 24th, 1958
Nogales 14, Chihuahua 13
By Konrad Kisch

In a wild back-and-forth slugfest, Nogales rallied from a 10-run deficit to shock Chihuahua 14–13 in 10 innings, capping one of the season’s most dramatic comebacks.

Chihuahua seemed in control early, with Ramiro Caballero leading the charge. He crushed two home runs and drove in seven runs, including a 3-run shot in the 3rd and a 434-foot blast in the 5th. Humberto Barbon added a solo homer in the 8th, and Gilberto Villarreal recorded three doubles as Chihuahua built a commanding 13–3 lead entering the bottom of the 8th.

Even as many home crowd fans were seen leaving after the 7th, Nogales refused to roll over and die.Fueled by Hilario Peña and Claudio Solano, the home team exploded for seven runs in the 8th, then tied it with three more in the 9th. Solano’s clutch double plated two, and Pedro Navarrete’s two-run single capped the 8th. In the 9th, Tomas Martell delivered an RBI double and later tied the game on Gregorio Figueroa’s grounder.

In the 10th, after loading the bases, Martell played hero again with a walk-o6 single to left, sending the remaining Nogales faithful into a frenzy.

Despite Ramiro Caballero’s monster night and 13 RBIs from the top of the Chihuahua lineup, the pitching sta6 couldn’t hold up their end of the bargain. Several Chihuahua players were visibly frustrated at their Skipper’s decision to leave starting pitcher Miranda in for the 8th inning, leading to the collapse of the pitching sta6.

Nogales outhit Chihuahua 20–18, led by Peña (5-for-7), Solano (2-for-3, 2 RBIs), and Martell (3-for-4, 3 RBIs). Manuel Perez earned the win in relief, while Leonal Aldama took the loss for Chihuahua. Player of the game honors went to Hilario Peña for his five-hit night and key 8th-inning spark. While both teams hold a (10-13) record following this contest, Nogales is riding high looking ahead thanks to the momentum from this late game comeback. Chihuahua needs to regroup and come back together as a team to rebound from the disappointing loss.
