Race weekend starts with finding the right basecamp.

Last year, we heard from several riders who had difficulty finding a place to stay in Douglas. We listened and expanded the lodging options on our website to include more hotels, motels, camping opportunities, and Airbnbs.

One option worth checking out is a private 900-square-foot loft inside a renovated church built in 1905. It sleeps up to four guests and includes a full kitchen, private deck, and plenty of space to settle in before and after the race.

Before Douglas was founded, and long before Geronimo Trail became a gravel route, cattle were moving through the San Bernardino Valley.

Ranching has shaped this corner of Arizona for generations. It has also taught a lasting lesson: working this dry, demanding landscape requires adaptation, cooperation, and respect for the land.

That spirit lives on through the Malpai Borderlands Group.

Founded by local ranchers, Malpai works across 800,000 acres in southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico to protect open space, restore grasslands and watersheds, support working ranches, and preserve connected wildlife habitat.
