N+1= New Bike

When I started at the shop last year, one of the first things I did was take a tour of the basement: aka the engine room or the dungeon.

While checking things out I came across a corner with a bunch of David’s bikes. And if you know David, he has great taste in bikes (I like to think I do too). Of course, my eye immediately landed on the Blue Surly fat bike dangling before me. It seemed ridiculous, yet intriguing. I’d never ridden one before and seeing one up close was something truly wacky.

Fast forward to last week when David made me
the PROUD NEW OWNER of this baddie. Say hello to Chubby Bunny! These Tucson washes are about to get a whole lot more rowdy!!!

Ride Stops

Nothing is funner or makes a ride more fulfilling than meandering wherever your heart takes you- whether it’s a side trail/road or the cutest lemonade stand on a 103’F day. The other evening Elliot Elliot DuMont and I embarked on a magical mountain bike ride.

We spotted and stopped to watch 5 roadrunners (the same name as Elliot’s old shop!),we viewed sunset on the city from multiple angles, stopped to admire the beautiful Sonoran landscape, a coyote and this magical lemonade stand. Did we stop to enjoy some refreshing lemonade? You betcha!

Thursdays are for riding.

Last Thursday Toby and I met up for an after work ride. Nothing crazy, just a casual spin up to our favorite mountain bike trails for a quick romp then home in time for dinner.
It ended up being a magical ride. We spotted five yes that’s (5) roadrunners within a mile! Wowy wow wow! Then cruising through the A Mountain Community, we spotted a girl selling lemonade for $1! What a deal on a 100 plus degree evening. She even had her own tow till for taking cash. We were so appreciative for two cold lemonades and a three dollar tip to boot. Her mom was around the corner in a van, keeping a watchful eye.

We rode off to Toby’s squeaky brakes as he spilled some lemonade on his rotors. A paper towel from the trash and some water later, we were in business. A nice ride was had, groovin’ and enjoying the scene and sunset. Happy to have riding buddies that are also workplace associates and of course, friends.

Spicy Home Build

I've been riding the hell out of my new Salsa Tributary for a couple months and it needed some attention. My brake pads were hosed, the cassette needed cleaning, and I beat the hell out of my wheels too so they got some truing.

Some more spicy upgrades coming to the Tributary soon, I'll share photos and details once I've got it all together!

From One End To The Other

I was so stoked to receive a text from Nancy two weeks ago informing she had just completed here ride! From Yorktown, VA to San Francisco, CA Nancy covered over 3,600 miles on her journey. While I know she’s sad it’s over, she’s stoked to spend time with family in the states before she heads back to Guatemala.

And you can tell she got bit by the bug because she’s already planning her next tour! Congratulations, Nancy! Your accomplishment has inspired all of us in the shop to keep exploring and step outside our comfort zones!

Wind Blasted & Nature Nurtured

I'm off this week taking the kids on their first visit of Southern Utah. Growing up in Flagstaff, Arizona, the wonderland that is Southern Utah was within easy reach of 5 to 6 hour drives and my parents took me on many adventures there. But now living in Tucson, the extra 4 to 5 hours of drive time makes it a much bigger push to get up here. But we finally made it happen for our big summer trip this year.

We started out with an epic drive through the Navajo Nation, into Monument Valley, through Mexican Hat and the Goose Necks (we are pictured here being pummeled by 60 mile per hour winds), through the Valley of the Gods and up the Moki Dugway, through Natural Bridges and Bears Ears, winding through the vastly underhyped Glen Canyon and then finally arriving in the luscious campground of Capitol Reef (Our camp and bikes are pictured here.)

After that epic driving tour to kick things off, we explored Capital Reef, Boulder and Escalante area and are now in Bryce. We'll be wrapping up in Zion before heading to Las Vegas for a reverse nature detox back to improper society.

Richard’s La Suprema

If you’ve been in the shop recently, you might have noticed this beauty. We have been working with our friend Richard on the restoration and update of this La Suprema, an iconic Tucson hand-crafted frame.The bike features a beautiful new paint job and has been retrofitted with a wide 1x12 GRX groupset. Richard was eager to get this bike back on the road, and I’m excited to see him riding this piece of art out in the world.

Bread man Tommy

Last week, our customer and friend Tommy brought us some of his finest work: delicious assortment of giant sourdough bread from Hidden Hearth Bakery at the Msa Annex. They are a great local bakery, and I highly recommend all of their baked goods to everyone.

Birthday Bonanza

This past weekend I celebrated 38 rotations around the sun with a traditional solid night ride, trailside burrito that culminated in a beer atop a trail with a great view of Tucson at 1am. I was accompanied by my amazing partner, Stef for the first few loops as I tried to tackle every trail in our local Tucson mountains. She asked at one point if I had seen any tarantulas this season and I said no.

As soon as she peeled off, I saw about 8, and 1 massive centipede, a few deers, night hawks, and heard some coyotes. Although I fell short of riding until the sun rose and only completed a small fraction of the trails, with 30 miles of hard techy mountain biking done, good company, some good food and burritos, a new Modest Mouse album new tunes from my favorite artist Bonobo, a new job at Campfire Cycling, and new home I’d say things are going pretty swell despite the chaos in the world around me and I’m very grateful for that.

B.O.B. Trailer Pizza Delivery

On Tuesday we closed the shop to get caught up on a backlog of bike builds. Seemed like a good time for a little pizza party so I got out the old BOB Trailer and rode over to Whole Slvce Pizza. Good thing about picking up pizza in hundred degree heat is the pizza stays warm on the delivery.
