Our 4th annual celebration of Girl Day on February 25th saw about 40 young girls and their parents attend a technical tour at the U of A Tech Park campus at I-10 and Rita Road. This tour had them explore the campus "spine" walkways where all utilities lines are housed above-ground and through the top-secret testing labs of IBM by a few of their engineers. Vail School District sponsored a bus tour of Tucson Electric Power's onsite solar power facility called the "Solar Zone". The day also included a presentation by Darling Geomatics of 3D scanning technologies and a demonstration of a Leica 3D scanner to the young girls. The tour concluded with a well-earned Eegee’s lunch sponsored by the UA Tech Park. A huge thank you to Lisa Roberts (WTS) who worked with engineers from IBM and Oracle at the U of A Tech Park to organize this event. Also, thank you to Vanessa Casteneda, Michelle Frandsen, Peter Loya, Mike Hernandez and Heidi Lasham for volunteering to help at the event.

Engineers Week 2016 Banquet - Photobooth
The Southern Arizona Engineers Week Awards Banquet celebrates the engineers and educators who make a world of difference in Southern Arizona. This event was held on Tuesday, February 23rd at the Hilton Tucson East. Cocktail hour featured appetizers, live music by Oliverio and a photo fun booth by Daniel Yu Imaging. This year’s featured speaker was 17th Surgeon General of the United States and Distinguished Professor of the U of A, Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H. FACS, who shared his inspirational life story. During the banquet, we recognized all nominees for Southern Arizona Educator of the Year (Sandy Merz & Enrique Santa Cruz), Young Engineer of the Year (Deirdre Brosnihan, Sean Samsel, and Kathryn Skinner) and Engineer of the Year (William Dupee, Andy McGovern, Steven Pageau, Claudia Perchinelli, and David Tapia), most of who attended. Congratulations to the 2016 award recipients Enrique Santa Cruz, Sean Samsel and Claudia Perchinelli. It was my pleasure to emcee the banquet activities and auction off this year’s autographed U of A men's basketball for the ASCE-SAB civil engineering scholarship fund. Congratulations to Mark Taylor of Westland Resources who had the winning bid. Thank you to our corporate sponsors AECOM and Southwest Gas, reception sponsors Rick Engineering and Stantec, and our smiles sponsor Terracon. Also, a huge thank you to Tami Griffin (SDA) and Deirdre Brosnihan (ASCE-President) for all your hard work in making the banquet great.
