Today, October 11th, is former TRC member Christine LaBarre’s birthday. Christine passed away suddenly earlier this year and in her memory, current TRC members Suzanne Dunn and Shari Nasworthy, along with TRC Board support, are raising funds to name a club double “Chrissy”, after her. Our goal is to raise the $400. If we collect more than $400, the funds will go toward our new dock (more information coming soon). If we fall short of our funding goal, Suzanne and her husband will make up the difference. You can send donations following instructions on our website Donate – Tulsa Rowing Club or by Venmo: (last four digits of Treasurer number 2384). Please indicate your donation is in memory of Christine.

Christine came to TRC after rowing with University of Tulsa for her entire college career. She loved the sport and wanted to continue once she graduated. She and her friend Megan Novak started rowing with Janeann Tauble and Suzanne Dunn in a quad. Christine was an amazing stroke, but they were confused as to why the boat kept pulling to port. Well, they figured it out. Christine was so strong on her starboard arm (pulling arm as port in sweep boat) that she was constantly pulling the entire quad into shore. After a few times in a single she figured out how to pull even, and the women’s quad was off to racing! They went to local regattas including OKC, Austin, St. Louis, and Wichita. They also traveled to Head of the Charles and raced and won gold in the quad at Master’s Nationals in Long Beach, CA and again in OKC.

Christine took over planning the Tulsa Sprints in 2009 and ran a successful regatta for two years. She bought items for TRC with funds raised, including the metal folding T’s we still use at regattas. Her charisma and positive attitude were contagious. As you know, rowing builds strong bodies and stronger friendships. She and I stayed close after she decided to get her master's degree at Carnegie Mellon and eventually took a job back in Boston to be closer to her family.

She loved Tulsa and would frequently come back to visit all her friends from TU and rowing. Thank you for considering giving funds in her memory and helping to name a boat for her.

What an exciting week we’ve had around the boathouse! Please join us in recognizing and congratulating our member, Jessica Barlow, on her well-deserved promotion to Advanced status! Jessica was part of the Tulsa Youth Rowing Association team in the early 2000’s and returned to rejoin the TRC’s master program earlier this year. She has a wealth of rowing and coxing experience and her love and respect for this sport are top-notch. We are thrilled to have her back in the boathouse! Congrats, Jessica! 🎉
