“I have always felt uncomfortable in the gym. It always seemed like people were staring at me or judging me for not knowing how to properly use the machines or not having learned proper lifting form. I had the desire to learn but didn’t want to spend the money on a personal trainer. So, I would do very basic things at the gym, if I even showed up. What I had been doing wasn’t making an impactful difference.
My partner had been taking CrossFit classes with Tomahawk Crossfit for four years and kept raving about how much he loved it. It was intriguing to me, but I kept letting my fear of not knowing how to do things and the potential judgment that could come with it hold me back.
It wasn’t until I went to an open gym day with my partner that I realized Tomahawk Crossfit is one of the most uplifting spaces and communities I have ever been a part of. Most people didn’t know who I was, but they were cheering me on and supporting me. Any question I had was answered supportively, and any adjustments I needed to make were shared compassionately.
After that first class, I decided I wanted to join the gym, so I did. Now, five months in, I have gained so much confidence and excitement about being in the gym. I look forward to going to classes. I have learned so much in just a few months and continue to shock myself with what I have been able to achieve. I feel so empowered when I hit a PR or achieve a new skill because the community and coaches are just as excited as I am.
In addition to gaining confidence in the gym, I have also found that I am in less pain from my scoliosis. The core training and strength-building have helped me have more pain-free days. This was an unexpected added benefit that I am very grateful for.” -Kira
